La Carrera Panamericana VI

September 10, 2018

This edition of the most demanding road race would start at Tuxtla Gutierrez and wander its way to the finish near Ciudad Juarez – just across the bridge from El Paso. Some teams arrived early to scout, map and plan tire stops along the way.

Some even chartered planes to fly their team of mechanics from one leg to the next. It became clear to most that preparation would be key to overcome the elements and survive this test of machine and man. Those who did were usually rewarded.

One lucky dog would also walk away with a rare Fox 10 motor generously donated by and courtesy of Ken – aka KensRedZed. That motor is highly sought after not just because of its superb performance but also because it is easy to incorporate into most scratch built projects…

Competing for the silver were eleven combatants racing in eight classes. They are (in order registered):

  1. That’s a lot of pics! Thanks again for hosting another great event and to Ken for donating the Fox 10!
Rumour has it Letona’s cousin “borrowed” the plates from another car prior to the race ;^)
    You never know in Mexico…

  2. The white walls are not inaccurate – many cars would have started with them but most if not all would have switched over to locally available black walled tires after they used up all the spares they brought with them… and blowing 20 or more tires over the course of the race on such a coarse surface was not uncommon… keep up the great work Ken! :good:

  3. My humble apologies to all the racers for the inaccuracy of the white wall tires.

Thanks goes to you Art for showing me the Molotow chrome pen. I didn’t know how to use it at first and had way too much ink flowing from the tip. Turned out to be a good mistake in the end. Specifically for the bumpers and hub caps, it made all the streaks and lines being left by the felt tip dissappear.
    Ken

  4. On a race night at The Ring I am usually so busy that it isn’t until I get a chance to review my photographs that I can appreciate the details of every model presented to the grid. For La Carrera Panamericana VI I took well over 100 pictures which I sorted and cropped into the gallery just for this event – and while editing had time to appreciate some of the details – here are a few highlights for me upon review:
#209 – wonderful weathering and dirt – I love the windscreen treatment where the windscreen is dirty but for the wiper swipes…
#18 – in addition to its pace I can’t believe how the chrome front grill & bumper just POP! Fabulous! Those white walls look great too – but would have blown early on and been replaced with a more durable equivalent such as the Mexican Goodrich-Euzkadis – a hard black walled tire designed for gravel…
#7 – very nice detailed painting on the driver and interior – plus realistic windscreen panes now – not to mention all of the decals and Carrera plates too [albeit with #10]…
#777 – I like the livery Jimbo and you did such a nice job on the paint – but any idea yet who it is modelled after and what make it is? Those opened rear wheel wells are throwing me off the trail…
#199 – DB – I can see how much work that poor resin casting must have been for you – but your efforts turned out quite nicely – I like the split windscreen detail too! Excellent!
