Live the CANAM series – leading up from the pre-curser SCCA/USRRC sanctioned events on through inception in 1966 and thereafter through the glorious years right up until 1974. Watch as the nimble lightweights finally gave way to American big block thunder. Rule changes would exclude some but others would adapt and dominate. Manufacturers such as Lola, McLaren, Porsche and finally Shadow would each taste success but the contributions from Chaparral, Lotus, Cooper, Ford, Jaguar, Ferrari and many many others would not go unnoticed.

This edition of CANAM Thunder would see 20 entries, 9 of them scratch eligible and 5 scratch built from Lotus, McLaren, Porsche, Cheetah, Ferrari, Chaparral, Cooper, Cobra and Alfa Romeo.

  1. Pardon the delay in my response to this race. Even though 9-months have passed. I remember it like it was only yesterday.

Like a total newbie, I proudly showed up to my second race with a stock Fly Porsche-906, and Monogram Lola T70 mk2. The the front tires on the Porsche were rubbing the inside of the body so badly, the car would not move forward without jerking. That sad car went back to the garage. Only because I missed the garbage can. :negative:
Luckily I still had the Lola. It vibrated like crazy because of the egg shaped tires. But at least it moved forward. The stock Monogram brushes fell out after 2-laps. Everyone tried to help re-install the brushes for me. I think I asked for a hammer. Then someone saved the day and quickly offered to loan me a Cheetah. Thank you!
Even with all the set-backs and a bad newbie experience. I’m looking forward to the next Can Am Thunder. I thank everyone in the club for that! :good:
    Ken

    1. Just to clarify. What I meant to say on the last line is, I thank everyone in the club for helping me get through the bad experience.
      Ken

  2. For completeness, a small correction to a great report: my #98 Cooper Monaco is not a scratch chassis, although I probably spent similar time and energy modifying the original Sebring chassis!

  3. Grazie mille per tutto il divertimento! Datta Ferrari, Mama Mia, letta mi tella yu, sheesha a da fasta uno yu evah gunna see!
And apologies for my 906 transgression, I erroneously thought the ‘Pre-CanAm’ was inclusive of 66.

  4. That 612 was the class of the field cornering an physics defying speeds.
    thanks again for hosting Art!

  5. Thanks for hosting a great night of racing. :good: An excellent field and a great report. Some very fast and close racing! That 612 is a real weapon! Took no prisioners!!
