Runabout Sponsored by DArt

It was great to see everyone run fun laps with quite an assortment of models now – everything from modern BRM replicas of small displacement motorcars to vintage Cox and Monogram gems!

Looking ahead I think we all are now getting comfortable with the following groups of large scale models:

  • Boulevard Cruisers (1:25) with a Fox 10 motor;
  • Vintage prototypes & sportscars from Cox, Monogram and others with original (or period) motors/chassis;
  • Modern BRM small displacement touring/sportscars including the Alfa, BMW, Ford, NSU, etc.; and
  • Scratch built classic era prototypes & sportscars (unlimited).

Should we consider all four of these groups for some casual racing in the future? If so, what parameters should we have for each of these ‘classes’? Please leave your comments with your suggestions and preferences below and remember, speak up now if you wish to influence our path. As always, those who attend regularly will have the loudest voices…

At the next S24 runabout we can try some casual racing for each of the four groups listed provided there are enough with models to race. We can also have some overlap or combine groups since no one has models for all four groups. Perhaps having two casual races – Boulevard Cruisers and all the rest in the other – we’ll see – but please get working on something else in another group if you already have a BC…

To keep our momentum I would suggest a mentor for each group to whom questions about recommended parts, new releases, retailers and anything else relating to that group could be answered. Please share any info in our S24 Forum too. I would recommend Ken for Boulevard Cruisers, F1nutz for Vintage Models, Chris for the BRM series and Felix for the Classic Era Prototypes and Sportscars (if their time permits). I can also help.

  1. i am happy to share info on the BRM cars.
    The Alfa and Opel cars seem to run the best at NovaRidge. The Scirocco also handles well. I think the Capri will also be good.
    I can recommend dealers to those interested.
    next post will include gearing and motor info.

  2. As far as racing goes I’m pretty happy to just run some casual laps particularly with the vintage stuff as it minimizes potential damage or missing parts.
    Just seeing several of these running around together gives me a thrill.
    I’m not opposed to racing in the other classes though.

    1. Thx Ken! I can’t tell what motor comes with that RTR chassis and the description is quite sparse… can you tell based on the colour of the wrapper? If I don’t have a tire yet that fits I can make them… not a problem… either way it looks like an affordable solution for those without the time to make their own… and the parts alone likely add up to the cost of that rolling chassis…

  3. I would love to have all four classes! I suppose the BRM models would be a stock class but for tires since they already run great as is – not sure if the motors/gearing is the same between similar models but that can be sorted – perhaps Chris can help provide a list of suitable/comparable models eligible for this class. As for the vintage models would it be too much to require that all models have vintage chassis/motors/parts? Perhaps a list of eligible available replacements would help? As for the scratch built (or any chassis) prototypes and sportscars I suppose anything goes – any chassis, any motor, any body… is there a recommended generic euro/flexi or other chassis that would be best for this group that can accommodate any 1960’s – early 1970’s prototypes/sportscars for those not able to scratch build a chassis?
    I also think an honourable mention should be given for a Hot Rod group too…
