With its siblings…
Well I think I’m calling this one done!
I’ve always been interested in rail racing.
I have an old Model Maker magazine somewhere with an article on electric rail racing from back in the day.
I also recall a group in Britain who run a proxy rail race in recent years.
It is basically the beginnings of both RC and slot car racing.
Thanks for the compliments. I hope they run as well as they look 😉
Some say the Col. in his early years commissioned the Kentucky Bucket which was fashioned to represent a bucket of his very own fried chicken. Well he drove it to special events and cruise nights in the parking lots of his upscale chicken villas until he parked it one day in his barn where his chicken were raised.
It then sat languishing for many a year as the Col. had gained so much girth from over imbibing on his 13 piece meals including cole slaw and biscuits that he could no longer fit behind the wheel. Now many years later a certain rooster named Reginald ‘The Rebel’ Rooster who was a cross with a Jersey Giant and a Foghorn Leghorn decided he’d had enough of the easy life fertilizing the eggs of every chick in the henhouse so he repaired the dilapidated T-bucket with tools and items at hand and he ‘Flew The Coop’ for greener pastures over yonder….or so the story goes.
Mississauga’s own Col. is indeed driving while eating a drumstick of his famous finger lick’n’ good chicken!
personally I avoid the stuff 😉
Forgot this one showing the distressed interior.
Thx Ken!
Almost complete ‘Flew ‘T’he Coop’ in the foreground.
’Kentucky Bucket’ body in the background.
Then a layer of gloss patchy red to vary the degree of distress on the paint followed by a rust layer to give a barn find look.
As I continued with the distressing process I painted on layers to simulate years of wear and tear.
First a layer of matte red being careful to match the stripes as well as avoid the scratched distressed areas.
I also did a rough concept sketch on the back of the kit instruction sheet to formalize the design in my head.
Let me take a moment to explain the concept of this rat rod.
My fellow racer when he chose a T-bucket as a subject remarks ‘You know, with a bunch of chickens inside!’
From my quizzical look it was clear to him that in fact I did not know so he elaborated, ‘It’s a bucket like KFC , you know a bucket of chicken!’
And so was born the concept for the rat rod called ‘Flew ‘T’he Coop’
I built the body in the background from the Lindbergh kit and planned on distressing it to look more like a rat rod.
However I liked the way the paint turned out so much I just couldn’t distress it.So I built a second body but this time I approached the paint differently which led to the body in the foreground with a nice silver base coat.
I then added a light incomplete pass of cream white to mimic a faded version of the bright white on the original body.
I used several grades of sand paper to scratch and scuff the cream white so the some of the silver metallic would show through.
Thanks for the info GI.
I didn’t know George raced.
The slot it looks great!
Nice car GI!
I look forward to seeing it on track!
The driver stance is great!
I complimented Hinch on his great job on the F1 coverage.
He signed my Robert Wickens shirt and said he’d met the guy a few times 😉
He was pretty busy getting wired up for an interview so it was nice that he took the time.
Great guy!
Hinch was kind enough to sign my t-shirt!
The had a Pinty’s series Nasty cab race on the Friday which was fun to watch.
PS Pit lane start of free practice.
Grosjean pit crew.
I didn’t take many but here are a few.
Nice to know the Easy Off did the trick.
I use Superclean because it doesn’t have the fumes Easy off does and it can be reused many times if stored in a plastic tub but sometimes it just doesn’t work.
Happy Canada Day!
Nice job! I’ve seen other pics of that car before and often thought of doing one. Glad someone did!
Yup! It ran Pike’s Peak in that livery.
Parnelli Jones drove it.
Looks like a chase cars chassis.
This guy has been doing these for quite a few years now.

and the Rockford Files T/A is available Jim 😉Hey Gary
Yes there certainly are a lot of parallels to Grand Prix.
Interestingly a young Francis Coppola is also listed in the credits as the sound man.
Les Baxter famed for his tiki exotica music is also credited as the music composer.
Roger Corman was also involved in helping produce the original Gone in 60 Seconds and I thought I read somewhere that he also did some of the stunt driving!?
He certainly had an interesting career.
Looks good so far! Looking forward to seeing the progress.
All good thx Gary. Just had carpal tunnel surgery so it will be a few weeks of recovery. So far so good.
hopefully my trigger finger will be a little quicker now 😉
Thanks for the heads up Art. I’ll be out of commission for a while myself so hope everyone has a great summer and are ready to go again in the fall!
Wow great job on the jps truck. Where did you get the decals?
Those Ho cars look like a flower bouquet 😉
Sounds like a great plan! I’ll see if I can implement it properly.
Thx for the info!
Yes I was thinking the same thing.
well I’ll come up with something…
Trying to do a drop front axle using thinner wire and maybe ferules inside the hubs for a more realistic look.
This is just a mock-up.
Has anyone else done this before?Slow progress but managed to get the rims and inserts painted.
Working on fluid caps.
Thx! The artist of the above painting is Terence Cuneo.
More about he and the Sunbeams here:
Apparently a bad crash by a Sunbeam which killed the riding mechanic at the 1924 Spanish GP led to the rule being changed to no longer allow riding mechanics
This came as just a body. Needed a lot of sanding and will need some accessory parts like windshield, fluid filler caps etc.
Custom grill, grill screen and exhaust are in progress
With the nice weather last night I went for a first coat of paint!
The lower body came out great in red but the resin top didn’t like the Krylon and ended up a blotchy mess!
It went into the Superclean bath over night and is now ready for some primer! Then repaint with Krylon off white. Need to go buy some primer first though.
I knew this project was going too well…
I had a project body all ready to go. Not sure who made the resin panel truck top for this as I picked it up at the last show as an unfinished project. (Thanks Kevin!)
Clearly others have been chopping and converting Kinsmart die cast models though.
Happy Easter! It was nice to have a break from everything.
Hahaha!
Getting closer.
Yes I’ve seen that picture as well. In the picture above you can see the wooden planks on the rear deck that they clipped on the back of those extensions for the front wheels. No doubt the nose would need to be removed to avoid it scraping the ground. I suspect part the rear exhaust is also remove to get the Lotus that tight up to the VW cab.
The Lotus is a standard issue Scalextric.
1st coat of paint. Went with blue but I may go with an off white to better match the car.
Probably down in the woods at the back end of Mosport 😉
Now the hard work begins. I just need to fabricate the back of the pickup cab and the pickup bed.
So out came the dremel and I cut off the back part of the upper die cast body and trimmed down the plastic lower body to the proportions of the pickup bed.
It’s a 1/32 die cast made by a company called Kinsmart. Well the top is die cast but the bottom is plastic. I thought it would make good track scenery when I bought it years ago, but what better scenery than a slot car transporter?
Pete Lovely used the pickup version of the VW Bus back in the 60’s to transport their F1 cars to and from the circuit.
What a beauty!
Thought I’d repost these here as an update.
Looks great! Ernie showed me a pre production white sample about a year ago when he saw my Polistil Shadow in my race box. Glad this is finally coming to fruition!
I’m pretty sure the ‘Ulster’ also raced at the Ulster Gp in N.I. from which it got its name. Likely also at the Phoenix Park races in Dublin for some famous cup which I forget the name of as well as races held at the Curragh which is a famous horse racing track outside Dublin if memory serves from some book I read a few years ago. I seem to recall a wealthy women owned one and financed its running in some races. But I may be confusing some of this with a Bentley story.
Looks great!
Looks great Jim. Unfortunately I’m still working on my gasser. One day it will get finished.
December 14, 2022 at 6:39 pm in reply to: The 1954 Pegaso Z102 Cabriolet Saoutchik 2a Serie Street #30859What a beauty! Nice work Jim!
Installed and painted some door framing as well as the first balcony!
Also making progress on the front side. Windows and doors cut and base coat of stucco applied.
Finished the first roof section and base coat applied. Roofing is hard, slow and time consuming. Good thing Maria was around with some Aperol spritzers.
…and that wasn’t Puccini she was singing. 😉
Thanks guys!
Not guaranteed for 25 seconds, this thing would leak like a sieve.
The roof is the most time consuming. That’s about 15 feet of plastic tubing all cut and split by hand. Took about 4 hours so far.
Considering other options.
Maria got knocked up by the roofers when they finished knocking up tiles. Hence the enormous Cannelonis!
Thanks guys.
Giuseppe and the roofing crew came over and knocked up a few tiles.Time for some stucco…
Progress on the stonework continues…
I took a larger more blunt instrument and further burnished the stone surface to give it a little more depth. Not sure if it will show on the picture but it adds more realism and definition for when the paint gets added.
Here’s a photo of the back side I used for reference.
I worked on the raw stone texture on the back of the buildings hand drawing/ indenting the stone shapes with a dull pencil. Windows will be framed in with balsa wood. Stone texture needs to be more roughed up but I think I’ve made a good start.
That’s another I’d like to build. You should try it!
Some of you may recognize it as this corner in a small village of Collesano near Palermo in Sicily.
Hopefully I can come somewhat close to the actual thing!
Looks fantastic Gary!
Even better in person!
nice to see a unique car for future grids.
Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you have a great long weekend all!
Another beauty! I’ve been meaning to finish mine. Maybe this will encourage me.
Looks great Luis!
Stunning!
Lots of great reference photos.
thanks
That’s a nice ASS and an even nicer body 😉
Looks great Art!
Will do!
They come in pairs so far so unless they’ve run out you’ll get both.
cheers
bill
Steve’s chassis.
Calling this one done!!
longest build ever…
Looks great!
Thx. Yes it’s still a bit of a blob but not too bad… 😉
Almost done!
They are great decals. My Matra has Indycals and I was very happy with the quality. The only complaint I would have is I wish he had added the other teammate car number to give more options.
Hope you’re feeling better soon Ken!
Great stuff! That Ferrari kit is awesome!
Duplicate post removed
Looks great so far Ken. I hope you get around to finishing it.
Looks like Bruce to me…
Sadly another legend lost.
Great looking option. Can’t wait to see it on track!
The Aston Martin actually had 3 different paint jobs!
Yellow, Gold with a maroon racing stripe and the pictured silver.
After a few hours soaking in super clean and a bit of toothbrush scrubbing they came up much better!
The Rover BRM came out like new, having been protected for years beneath that ugly paint.
The Aston Martin still has some glued in paint and some glue melt affecting the roof from when the windshield was glued in but I think it is repairable.
I forgot to remove the chrome parts so they got stripped as well but they were too shined regardless.
Wow! That looks great Luis! Nice job! I love the Firestone tire decals they really make it!
Thanks guys.
I think this driver’s motto is ‘None shall pass!’ For it is ‘Only a flesh wound’
Art I have another Jeep so I may be able to make a duplicate static version for MVL.
I’d like to motorized this one for track usage.
Had a little accident while working on the ‘patient’.
oops!
