A bit of a repaint and swap the helmet for a driver’s helmet and we’ll be in business!
Maybe these will help you see where I’m going with this
I’ve noticed when posting photos that there is no prompt to scale them to a certain maximum size as is often the case on email clients or other platforms. Some ,like fb do it automagically.
Perhaps this could be an issue with the sheer size of the image data slowing things?
Thx Joe. Yes in later years Chaparral moved away from the usual 65,66 numbering. I just wondered if this event may have been one of the first since they used 5 and 6 and still in the Route 66 font (that is to say the font on the cars by design matches the original Route 66 signpost font) which I presume may have been the number stickers they had on hand at the time.
Different events have different numbering requirementsback in the day and there isn’t a lot of information as to how/if they were assigned by race organizers or submitted by teams. It’s always intrigued me as to how teams/cars get their numbers for various races. This instance just seemed strange that Alfa would end up with the exact numbers made famous by Jim Hall’s team up to that point.
It’s almost like some kid showing up on the oilers with a 99 on his jersey and making Gretzky wear 9. ;^)Incredible attention to detail Felix!
Nice job! Someone I used to work with had a real one that colour. I also have that kit in my project pile. One day…
Interestingly while doing research I discovered that at Sebring 1967 the 2 Alfa’s entered where numbers 65 and 66 which as most of you know are synonymous with Jim Hall’s Chaparral team. Hall entered a 2D and a 2F with numbers 5 and 6 so there must be a story behind this unusual circumstance.
Video of the 67 race. Some iconic cars entered that year.

Thanks guys.
Here is a pic of the completed Alfa along with a just completed Chaparral 2E sister car (also a Bandai kit conversion)
Motor will be a Cox 16D
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Almost done just need to add the mirrors and headlights, clear coat and mount on the chassis.</p>
Chassis is appropriately a Cox Magnesium chassis since the actual car has a magnesium tube chassis itself. Magnesium wheels as well so it is super light. Here’s a work in progress shot.
Here’s what the box art looks like which is a lot nicer than the actual model.
The body is an old Bandai kit from the 60’s. It is pretty basic with a flat fake interior and not much engine detail. Has a flip front and rear but I glued the pieces all together to make a more solid body. I wish I had taken a before photo because it looked barely salvageable. Lots of glue had to be sanded out and smoothed.
This is the model I’m hoping to replicate.
Thx
I was surprised at the similarity when I am saw your post.
I wish they did this stuff in 1/32.
Wow! Spectacular job DB! Really nice finish on that one. Well done.
There used to be a site that posted clips of slot car tracks in movies and tv shows.
Another I recall was an Australian film called The Efficiency expert which featured a slot club at a company that Anthony Hopkins’ character is trying to streamline. The slot racing in that movie plays a large part in the plot.
Nice build so far!
I’ve always wanted to visit the LASCM.
There was a video tour posted years ago somewhere online but I can’t seem to find it now.
Great work Chris. I’ll have to work up some of my 1/24 stuff.
Thermal finger protectors!
Some of the items I got.
It was a bigger show than I expected. It was good to catch up with the slot community again.
Decals complete! Now to clear coat and add a few paint detail then reassemble.
Thanks!
This one may end up being a trailer queen but I’ll bring it out for the 50’s front engine event.
I may build a scratch chassis for it at some time in the future but for the time being it will be stock Scalextric.
They only made a few different variations of this body back in the day. One being the Pennzoil sponsored car as well a Duracell and maybe a shell car of Kenny Brack and this one which was white and blue and sponsored by Eurosport.
PI found a 1/24 decal sheet at a show a few years back and though while it is a little large does fit on the car for the most part.
Here’s a Wip shot of the Paul Tracey livery from the mid 90’s almost complete.
Nice work Steve! Digging out my chassis and parts for assembly as we speak.
Looking forward to seeing your progress Ken.
Model kit prices are really getting up there though. 🙁
nice!
A true legend.
Don’t worry you aren’t missing too much. Though they do show Superbike races as well.
If you have REV tv they are reshowing the Drive Festival over the next couple weeks in 3 parts. Some nice cars!
Prego prego
There was no d-50 nor the 60’s F1 behind it in the picture.
<p style=”text-align: left;”>I assume they must rotate the displays over time.</p>
We drove past the Maserati offices in Modena not far from the Ferrari museum but didn’t have time for more.Next time.
Yes
No but roped off.
Agreed!
No Lancia was it a D 50?
only had time for the 2 Ferrari museums but had to leave something for next time.
One week mostly lake Garda.
Tried to get to the Italian GP but covid restrictions were too tight.
Back in Dublin now.
Some guys have nicer cars than I so no sympathy here 😉
cheers!
Bill
I’ll post more as time allows.
Cool! I see they are planning on releasing a Vega funny car as well.
I was hoping to go Jim but not sure at this point.
The Glen historics are the same weekend so I’d prefer to do that if the border opens by then but who knows?
This could be the best option though.
let me know what your plans are and maybe we can meet up.
It’s quite a house. The track is vintage Strombecker.
June 22, 2021 at 11:54 am in reply to: De Tomaso plans to move to America and start building the P72 #18685Nice looking car! Very old school design with modern touches.
Don’t want to rain on the outdoor track idea but it seems like a huge investment in time, energy and money for what might be a short term solution.
I for one would also need use of bathroom facilities which would somewhat negate the outdoor aspect unless the host was ok with ‘outdoor facilities use’ 😉With the vaccines being rolled out, however slowly, I’m cautiously optimistic we might start returning to ‘normal’ sooner rather than later.
If in-house racing is the issue then venues like MVL, Racehaven and even Ernie’s new track could be considered as ‘outside’ locations which might help keep vulnerable family members less at risk while still allowing us to start a racing season at some point in the summer.just my 2cents
Yes great to see the old equipment driven again in anger. Accidents are unfortunate but these beasts are far more impressive on track than in a static museum.
My bucket list as well but my bucket is full of covid holes and slowly leaking away it’s contents unfortunately.
stay safe!
Sadly that was only the beginning to the weekend’s carnage. Below that clip is a link to the live stream of the entire weekend, which is what I was intending to post.
I watched the Sunday action last night and some amazing machinery was thrashed and trashed around Monte Carlo yesterday.
Iirc the rails on Carrera track are stainless so they are a little more resistant to minor weather than other brands.
Glad you like it. I got a kick out of it as well.
Stellar work on the chassis Steve!
That mini chop saw is also awesome!
There’s always this option…
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Great pics! Thanks for posting.
I may need to repaint my driver Chris ;)</p>Yes Ninco running gear on a copper tube chassis I built long before joining the group. Powered by a vintage 16d scalextric motor.
windshield, driver, louvers, gas cap and tonneauare D’Art reproductions.
I’ll upload the file as soon as I can find it. It could be on one of several computers.
cheers!
bill
Thanks GL
This is an original body with some d’art parts used to restore it. I did design and print the decals. Let me know if you’d like the file to print your own. You’re welcome to it.
cheers!
bill
Sad to lose another great Canadian racer.
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Well done Steve! It takes great commitment on your part to learn the software and troubleshoot an refine your design. It looks great so far and I look forward to seeing it on the track.</p>
Interesting that they would list it on BaT site.
I have a chipperfield giraffe truck and a bat mobile., neither in great shape though.
Looks great Drew. I like the idea of using clear tear offs under where the light is as some over spray can happen there if using rattle cans. Good luck with the first coat.
Yes that is painful to watch. Also the later version of the car. That was a dumb place to film the clip. Clearly not enough room to slow down properly before turning. Hopefully mine will corner slightly better. We’ll see.
Looks great!
A very clean build GI nicely done!
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Thanks Jim yes I have the rest of the kit so no worries re: windows. It had been buried in a closet for the last 10 years. I did print the decals for the main logo but most of the contingency decals came from various other kits’ leftovers since my printed decals are not as sharp as I would prefer them. I have wanted to build this subject for a long time but never really got to it. The next event posted has a couple of dragster classes including a ‘gasser’ class. My understanding is that it will be a circuit race but drag racing is an intriguing idea as well. Regardless this gives me an excuse to finally build the car in this outstanding (upstanding?) and famous livery. Thanks again.</p>
BillThe library has 3D printers. Not sure what size they print up to. Printing a 1/32 body would probably take days.
Here’s a more natural stance.
Decals on! Just some small paint touch ups and off to clear coat.Starting to look like a drag car!
Haha thanks! Maybe I can put my sculpting skills to work and make a Linda Vaughn figure 😉
Have to build the car first 😉
Ok ok you guys are a little slow on the uptake today so here goes, last hint.
This might help jog your memory…Hemmmmm…let me think
Maybe it clearer after the mask reveal…
Anyone guess where I’m headed with this?
