    A few updates to test:

    More removable borders added to the infield. Now the whole track is walled – inside and out – with a forgiving EVA foam covered wall which won’t scrape the paint on any car body. The painted wall itself has movement too because it is made from flexi-ply.

    Painted concrete coloured patches now cover what were originally the black and white ‘pro’ curbs. These patches were painted with an eggshell acrylic which offers much less grip than the flat latex – similar to the painted floor surface at Nova Ridge. The result creates two racing lines through all corners – an inside and an outside line – miss the inside line and run a little wider. Note the painted ‘cracks’ to age this track…

    Foam blocks set against the wall on the straight offer protection for models in the pit lane – and the weight of hockey pucks keep them in place.

    Gaps in the wall barriers have EVA foam inserts fitted. Urethane tire stacks help keep racers away from the pit area.

    Start finish line made using some white duct tape covered with orange adhesive sheet from Michaels. Sticks well and looks great!

    Lots of experimental joints in this section of track. Coloured epoxy was also used as a test patch should the cardboard surface be damaged. Lots of painted cracks give the section a weathered and worn look. The only thing not yet done was to airbrush the racing line, shade the edges and curbs and add more cracks…

    All sorts of joints were tested and the smoothest ones were the most labour intensive. Various quality of adhesives and double sided carpet tape were tested too. Conclusion: you get what you pay for – no surprise.

    Even a larger gap in a joint is no problem for the Mini-Z models to traverse. Here I used black automotive GOOP to fill in a wide otherwise unfinished joint.

    This closeup of the outside of the wall barrier shows what I made to fix the walls to the edges of the cardboard track. One screw pierces the cardboard pressing it firmly against the bottom of the wall support. When finished you can loosen the screw and slide the wall support off of the cardboard track. Roll up the track and move it somewhere else.

    You can also walk on the track – the thick cardboard and paint layer are very durable so long as you avoid damp conditions. Fortunately my basement is very dry. Just give it a vacuum and you are good to go!

    F1nutz and I tested the track for several hours – he with his Acura and his Grp C – and I with my Lark McLaren and Grp C – and I had a blast running both of my models! Looks like the Mini-Z platform is here to stay!

    I also received my order from Barrie RC with assorted RWD parts and both the Toyota GT One and Mercedes Sauber C9 white body kits. The Mercedes is now out of stock and along with the Porsche 962 looks to be very hard to find. I have no doubt that the same will be true for the Mazda 787B white body kit and the Toyota GT One in the near future. At least with one of each I have the option now to make more.

    I’m also working towards mating 1:24 model kits to the RWD Mini-Z platform. The Grp 5 Lancia Stratos Turbo by Tamiya may be my first – with a wheelbase of 90mm I’ll be able to use the RM pod in a stock configuration but I will need to offset the wheels to make up for the wide track both front and rear. Can’t wait since I’ve got everything I need now to get it done…

    As for the portable Zing II track – testing and experimentation is complete and went very well – the small size and painted cardboard material exceeded my own expectations making it a very worthwhile endeavor. Next up a painted concrete floor version in what is currently The Ring race room. It’s been a long and great run with The Ring and it served well but my focus is shifting away from that sort of thing. It was fabulous to run laps this past Monday with a few others who also share my passion for racing history in my favourite slot car classes: Classic LeMans, 1970’s Grand Prix and CAN AM. A very fitting and enjoyable way to close out this chapter.

    in reply to: RWD LM 102mm (3L) to 98mm (LL) wheelbase conversion #44824

    Great to confirm what we suspected: that the LM motor pod can be used in place of the MM pod to reduce the MR03 RWD wheelbase from 102mm for the Grp C models to 98mm for most of the GT models!

    The damper and lower motor position of the LM motor pod will definitely improve handling for the shorter wheelbase – how much so remains to be seen…

    Great work F1nutz!

    From a personal standpoint as the quality of the racing in our group increases open wheel classes such as 1970’s G.P. are becoming much more enjoyable than at any other time. I feel we need to give a lot of credit to those new to our group/hobby who have bought into the ideal that car control and keeping your car tidy through the corners is the fastest way around the track. Like Prost used to say, the more you move the steering wheel the slower you are going… the level of carnage is inversely proportional to the level of enjoyment and so less translates to more… and that is a winning formula that you won’t get at too many places… anyone who appreciates and enjoys racing with ‘one of a kind’ scratch built liveries/bodies/chassis which take plenty of hours to make and a fair bit of skill to do well will only encourage more of them in any class if everyone races in a ‘tidy’ fashion. And when you combine the cars with a beautifully scenerized race track such as Spa-Lyons (or others in our rotation) then the enjoyment level is beyond what any public or commercial track could ever provide. Not to mention a perfect assortment of personalities – just enough diversity to keep things interesting yet balanced and harmonious so that we don’t waste too much time arguing – absolutely fabulous! …after all, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts… Cheers! :yes:

    Hi there philc712 – the post race ‘staged’ pictures we take are misleading because we do not run digital or use a lane changing system – our tracks are all analog three or four lane routed tracks with just one car running per lane… very traditional.
    Cheers!

    It was so close KK and I tied for 1st in the first of our three heats in one class! The software listed us as both 1st with identical times/extensions! And because we were racing together for the next two heats (we divided the field into groups of three) that heat set up barn burners for the next two – you NEVER get that when you race everyone straight through… that was the argument why the group should always race in groups of three… Wow it was fun! :good:  :good:  :good:  :good:  :good:

    Gents,

    The focus of Scratch32 is on the cars that we each build to race. The cars will be the ‘stars’ of this show – not the track nor any racer. Results will reference only the driver listed for that model, not the builder/racer as with R32 or most other groups.

    Even though pictures are worth ‘a thousand words’ a picture alone cannot tell the complete story of what lies beneath a beautifully prepared shell. For this reason we have the Scratch32 Race Entry List for everyone to complete prior to rolling to the grid. This information which we will share after every event together with race photos will give everyone who actively participates a chance to learn and hopefully improve both the quality and performance of their future projects. You’ve spent hours preparing a one of a kind model and should be very proud of your detailing efforts.

    Those of you planning to race at Ringwood this Friday evening please read the Scratch32 Race Entry List Explained (How To) and download and complete your Entry List Form as accurately as possible. The Form and How To are both located on our forms page – or click the link below for the Form itself… this form is a good start and will give me information regarding each of your models which can be shared with others for the benefit of everyone. This form will likely evolve over time but I do plan to ask everyone to complete it prior to each Scratch32 racing event. As our database grows you will not need to re-submit information about a specific model unless you’ve made a change to it. The form should take less than 10 minutes to complete and can be done that evening either before or after we race and I am happy to help fill it in with you too. If you can, fill it in advance and bring it with you – leave anything you are unsure of blank and I’ll help out…

    Scratch32 Entry List Form (Grand Prix)

    As for the Scratch32 racing format (for all four Grand Prix classes this Friday) we will do something a little different than R32… this new format will sort each class grid quickly and accurately to ensure the closest racing.

    Door prizes will also be awarded at every Scratch32 event starting this Friday.

    So far transporters from the following teams are scheduled to arrive at The Ring this Friday:

    • MiA
    • DaB
    • BiG
    • DwM
    • JmO
    • ArT

    I’ll prepare welcome packages for each team. Doors are open anytime after 3pm. Pizza at 6:30 and racing starting no later than 7pm (earlier if everyone is here) with a target finishing time between 9:30 and 10pm.

    I can’t remember when I had so much fun with the hobby in the past several years – both with that evenings’ celebration of racing among peers who share my passion and the build-up (literally) to it… just wonderful – and I was happy to share as much as I could in the report. Fastest laps, who of us beat who, irrelevant!!! This is our tribute to a by gone era of gentlemen racers. Let us all enjoy and embrace the past and what it stood for. The celebration will definitely continue! Thank you Michael for your added inspiration and support. I am indebted to you and your enthusiasm for the history of motor racing. :good:

    I will see you next week.

    in reply to: Upcoming ’70/’71 Targa Florio #1731

    The intent of the Targa race is two-fold:
    -to have raced liveries (not just models) participate, no duplicates; and
    -to include as many racers as can make it out to race;
    In the future I would like to include slower classes but that is clearly too ambitious right now…
    -so for the time being and as previously stated we will limit the classes to P and S (lower displacements allowed in both)… since some are having difficulty sourcing eligible cars we will allow any livery (and obviously model) that practiced or even registered for the race but did not start. The catch however is that anyone running a car that didn’t start the race must provide some sort of satisfactory evidence that the livery was practiced or at least registered. The intent after all is to have a representative field of cars that did race – I’ll leave it to each of you to use your own judgement to determine how far you wish to push the envelope…

    Rules are simple:
    -must be a ‘raced’ livery/model from either the 1970 or 1971 Targa Florio but for the exceptions noted above;

    -any motor;

    -any configuration;

    -any plastic/resin body;

    -any chassis (custom or commercially available);

    -only 15” scale (14mm) wheels at rear; and

    -stock (untreated, not cracked or shiny) or club urethane front tires, club urethane rear tires.

    Questions?

    Open practice on the morning of the race:

    It was 10:00am and Herr Stroebl dropped the green flag for individual qualifying – 5 of the 7 entries were ready – the rest would start in positions at the rear of the field.

    Qualifying was fast and furious with the top three qualifiers in the 6.0s…

    Qualifying Result:

    Pole: Art – 6.049 seconds (Green)
    2. JoB – 6.056 (Yellow)
    3. KKr – 6.085 (Yellow)
    4. JMs – 6.206 (Yellow)
    5. MiA – 6.394 (Yellow)
    6. SiR – No Time
    7. ToN – No Time

    Promptly at 10:30am the green flag fell to start this edition of the 2.4h race. After the first seven heats and one quarter distance JoB jumped out into an early lead, also posting what would turn out to the be fastest lap of the race. ToN would struggle early on, eventually forced to switch to a backup. Resulting penalties proved hard to overcome.

    The top three would be separated by just 2 laps… and SiR passed MiA to take over 5th place… just three laps behind JMS…

    Quarter distance standings:

    1. JoB – 349 Laps
    2. Art – 348
    3. KKr – 347
    4. JMs – 336
    5. SiR – 333
    6. MiA – 326
    7. ToN – 208

    Dusk fell and some began to struggle. An uncooperative body mount screw caused severe handling issues for SiR, forcing a costly green flag pit stop. With the issue resolved and new tires SiR was back on track after 4 minutes… allowing MiA to reclaim fifth place… at the front the battle was fierce, with Art pushing hard and eventually passing JoB to take the lead. Just three laps separated the top three…

    Half-way Standings:

    1. Art – 692 Laps

    2. JoB – 691

    3. KKr – 689

    4. JMs – 664

    5. MiA – 652

    6. SiR – 621

    7. ToN – 515

    Temperatures rose as it became darkest in the forest. Several struggled… tires were wearing, fingers were cramping and eyes were drowsy. Every racer battled through to finish their heats… JoB lost a lap to the leader and KKr struggled to stay just 5 laps behind. SiR and MiA remained quick. Noises worried team JMs but he held position. ToN would survive several off track excursions and continue running.

    Three Quarter Distance Standings:

    1. Art – 1027 Laps

    2. JoB – 1025
    3. KKr – 1020
    4. JMs – 982
    5. MiA – 954
    6. SiR – 939
    7. ToN – 807

    As daylight broke JoB began an epic charge to the front although lap times for the leaders were noticeably slower now… Both Art and KKr were racing on ovals… late in the race JoB passed Art to take the lead… JMs also struggling, had MiA closing but the gap was still too much to overcome… SiR and ToN completed the field… JoB would finish with a record total of 1365 laps for the event, one more than last years’ race winner. Art would finish one lap back with KKr locking down third 11 laps behind the leader.

    Final Race Results:

    1. JoB – 1365 Laps (49.874 ext.)

    2. Art – 1364 (36.016)
    3. KKr – 1354 (53.873)
    4. JMs – 1303 (43.933)
    5. MiA – 1281 (32.596)
    6. SiR – 1266 (47.662)
    7. ToN – 1116 (84.543)

    The field, in order of finish:

    The race was not without its fair share of carnage – and parts littered the track…

    Congratulations to JoB for a great battle and fantastic drive at the end to take his first ever 2.4h title, setting a new race lap total which will likely be hard to beat!!! Cheers to everyone who participated and made it such a fun filled day of racing – KKr, JMs, SiR and ToN…

    The International Race of Champions

    2017

    This IROC style event permits every pilot an opportunity to race three similarly prepared and reliable models, one on each lane in 3 minute heats over 4 rotations for a total of 36 minutes. Each of these historical endurance models will have a carefully prepared and superbly handling scratch built chassis mated to a modified (but formerly available) production body. For this particular 2017 IROC edition the following three models were chosen:

    • No. 29 Lola T290 raced by Edwards/Hobbs in the 1972 BOAC endurance race at Brands Hatch;

    Of course it is! The minions in the workshop are operating at beyond maximum capacity finishing up work on the models to get them ready for Wednesday!

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    The Grid is frozen at 6 – the perfect number for a three lane track! I will see everyone Wednesday evening as planned. Don’t forget your controllers!

    :good:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Unfortunately we must postpone the practice/qualifying session to another day prior to the race – as I’ve emailed each participant – qualifying will occur immediately prior to the race next Wednesday. Some are content with having practice in the afternoon before the race and so they will – I’m still arranging practice for any others – practice available to everyone will be 3 hours to make things as fair as possible.

    So far the following practice sessions are confirmed (and I’ll confirm more on request):

    1) Wednesday, December 20 (3:30 pm through 6:30 pm);

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    I’ve heard back from several pilots, but not all, so I will go ahead and confirm the following practice sessions:

    1) Monday, December 18 (3:30 pm through 6:30 pm) followed by the Targa Florio III;

    2) Tuesday, December 19 (7:30 pm through 10:30 pm);

    3) Wednesday, December 20 (3:30 pm through 6:30 pm) [F1nutz, DB, Porsche911];

    There will be no other practice sessions scheduled before December 18 – enjoy the balance of the week and your final weekend before the Christmas holidays are officially here.

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Gents,

    To confirm – no one attended the Monday practice session.

    It was suggested that we get Chinese for Wednesday. I love that idea. Chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce, fried rice and egg/spring rolls are amazing at a local establishment – so if we get an assorted dinner for 6/7 plus a slew of the balls we should be good – so in addition to the prizes I would suggest a DArt gift certificate for $20 with a Chinese dinner. Anyone that can’t do that we’ll get some pizza – but please let me know…

    Cheers! :good:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Jim O. attended the Tuesday practice session for a half hour or so.

    Don’t forget to bring your controllers!

    All three of the cars will be available for sale after the race for those interested. We may do a silent auction with reserve – or discuss during the event… More on that tomorrow…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Here are the prizes for tonight’s 2017 IROC event:

    Six DArt body kits ($300), two ‘door’ prizes (NOT DArt products = $30 each) plus two additional ‘UNOBTAINIUM’ gifts ($5 each) in addition to the $20 gift certificate every pilot will receive for a total of $490 in prizes/certificates. Every participant will receive a minimum of $50 in prizes after the race. The breakdown is as follows:

    • 1st place – 1st choice of DArt body kit;
    • 2nd place – 2nd choice of DArt body kit;
    • 3rd place – 3rd choice of DArt body kit;
    • 4th place – 4th choice of DArt body kit;
    • 5th place – 1st choice of door prize;
    • 6th place – remaining door prize;
    • Fewest Crashes – pick of the remaining two DArt body kits PLUS unobtainium prize; and
    • Second Fewest Crashes – remaining DArt body kit PLUS unobtainium prize.
    • In addition to the above every participant receives a $20 gift certificate.

    Good Luck! :good:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    And the grid looks as follows:

    These models are all using slot.it white endbell motors (can drive) with sidewinder slot.it gearing. Every chassis is custom built using BWA wheels, DArt inserts and DArt urethane tires. The Lola T290 weighs in at 94.8g, the Chevron at 101.1g and the Ferrari 312PB at 94.5g.

    Good Luck to our Pilots! :bye:

    Following up from Bill’s session and for the upcoming body painting session you can find Citadel water based paints here:

    Games Workshop

    Use the store locator – they have many retail outlets around the GTA so there is one definitely near you. You can also order online and they take the usual payment methods plus Paypal. They also sell some accessories, including brushes.

    Pay attention to the different paint types which are all explained on their website, or better yet, go and talk to someone at the store. They also have helpful tips and videos. From what I can see costs of the paints vary from $5 to $9 (excluding sprays).

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    First we tackled two types of common inserts – the 450porsche356 & the 450wire3ko by doing a set of each. All inserts were primed with Tamiya primer then given a shot of Tamiya TS-30 as a base coat.

    For the wire3ko set we simply used one liberal application of Citadel ‘Nuln Oil’ Shade applied liberally with a brush to the entire wheel and knock off and then touched up any wanting areas with another application. The same effect can be achieved using Tamiya flat black acrylic diluted significantly. To finish this insert style we painted the knock off chrome using the Molotow liquid chrome 4mm pumpmarker. This insert looks great in a BWA/RS Slot 7mm wheel with a DART DA0201 tyre. A couple of nylon washers were used to position the insert away from the back of the insert cavity.

    Next up we used assorted Tamiya brush on acrylics (diluted slightly with Tamiya thinner) to paint the 450porsche356 inserts – the hub, the outside vent holes and the bolts. After everything dried we hit the insert with a liberal wash of flat black (very diluted).

    These will pop inside a wheel painted with the same TS-30 colour. Whether you choose to seal the inserts afterwards is your choice, but I usually never bother. Remember to use a touch of white glue to secure your inserts and nylon washers to space them away from the insert cavity…

    Cheers to Porsche911 and MiA who each won a set of these finished inserts.

    We moved on to tackle the green Sandeman 612 body which will be continued in the Ferrari 612 CAN AM Sandeman thread…

    Cheers! Art :good:

    HA! Good luck finding any speed secrets! [If you do let me know…]

    Cheers! Bill.

    And a huge thank you to each of you who have helped start up THE best model car race group I’ve ever been a part of. You all deserve the praise. You never bailed. You helped us in our academy sessions. You contribute to the website. The prizes are the least I could do.

    I know I’m far from the best builder, modeller, or painter, but as one of you reminded me, I do put in a solid effort. I’ll take your advice and remain proud of doing just that….

    Thank You!

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    That was a tremendous session Bill – thank you for your real-time demonstration on painting technique and ‘how to’! Lots of great tips and tricks that all of us will put to good use in our upcoming projects! Cheers! :yahoo:

    Joe was clearly chuffed to win your painted handiwork too – hopefully we’ll see it in one of his models at a Scratch32 event soon…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Thank you for the info Michael!

    To the best of my knowledge Vallejo paints are available online for those of us in the GTA – Sunward Hobbies (a Canadian online retailer) and Amazon carry them…

    How do their metallic flake paints compare to Citadel? Are they as fine or better?

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Cheers Michael! Anytime!

    As you know we did not have time to finish applying all 34 of the decals on the Piper Sandeman Ferrari 612 that we chose to work on last night, so I finished it up this morning and so it was done by 7am… This was one of three bodies that I had painted base coats on a year or so ago and they were just collecting dust. Of the three since this was a dark green it would be the trickiest of the three to decal (the others were yellow [612] and white [M12]) so what better a project to tackle! All (but 5) of the decals used were printed using my standard inkjet printer and coated with two coats of Krylon Crystal Clear (as I do with all of the decals I make). Regarding the five store bought decals used – three were rectangular Monogram white blank number plates with a black pinstripe border and two were Pattos Ferrari badge decals – in hindsight I was disappointed with both the opacity and misaligned pin stripe on the white blank Monogram number plates (but it gives the model character) and should have just printed my own along with the Pattos Ferrari badges since I am really not a fan of their low resolution. Nevertheless the project turned out just fine. The decals will be left to dry for a few days and after some cleaning up the body will be ready for two clear coats (yet to be determined), then some detail painting and a dark wash. I haven’t decided if I want to paint or decal the spoiler orange yet… no rush…

    …for those who missed the session everything you need to know is in this photo…

    A follow up session on detailing the body is a good idea Michael – so we should schedule that in November – stay tuned… up next in October is Bill’s session on hand painting drivers and figures… please remember to register for that one. :good:

    Hi Michael – Cheers! Glad you found the session helpful! Always fun!

    Regarding the attachments – they work!!! – and no they do not appear in the body of the text nor are they supposed to – AND they can only be seen or downloaded by those logged in – so attachments are a perfect way to share files among our registered users only…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Hi Michael,

    Yes! One of my close slot car friends who is also a member of scratch32 (‘Bob’) purchased a bunch of white metal figures from you a while ago and gave me those three photographers which I painted and now move around the track from time to time. They are wonderful! The quality and detail of your figures are exceptional and they all have very natural poses!

    I’d love to see a catalogue of all of them so I can get more. If you have an online catalogue somewhere you should put a link to it from the New Releases forum or the Resources/How to – Scenerize It sub forum…

    Cheers!

    in reply to: Ringwood XVIII #2096

    February 13, 2017 – Ringwood XVIII – The Ring

    Teams arrived and unloaded – some were designated a patch of grass…

    Closer to the paddock the main teams would take their places and begin preparations…

    Fastest lap in the qualifying heats would determine race seeding for each class. After 8 heats the grid was set.

    1950’s Grand Prix (240 sec. x 3 x 1 = 12 min.)

    The debut race for this Ferrari 375 driven by J.F. Gonzalez… with other scratch entries awaiting the green flag…

    A close up of the Ferrari wire wheel detail with three ear knock off…

    Notice the yellow band around the nose of this D50 to identify Fangio… fine wire mesh detail also reveals a new radiator…

    The worn single exhaust pipe on this BRM P25 runs underneath the rear axle and has a removable piece to allow disassembly – just behind the pipe hanger. Notice also that the tires on this entry are clearly identified by the 1/8″ white dot…

    Not how to win the race… obviously they ignored Ron’s advice (above)…

    Nevertheless the rest of the field made it home in one piece.

    1950’s Grand Prix Results

    1. #11 – J.M. Fangio (Ferrari D50) 101 Laps (11.885 ext.);
    2. #20 – A. Pilette (Ferrari D50) 99 (15.278);
    3. #12 – J.F. Gonzalez (Ferrari 375) 95 (7.722);
    4. #6 – S. Moss (BRM P25) 94 (5.517);

    6. #8 – H. Schell (BRM P25) 87 (9.786).
      **DNS #6 – D. Serafini (Ferrari 375).

    1.5L Grand Prix (240 sec. x 3 x 1 = 9 min.)

    Black Jack just missed climbing his way to 2nd place from 4th on the grid…

    …and a solid debut for a very smooth #5 Lotus 24 of Taylor…

    A fantastic field of scratch built entries.

    1.5L Grand Prix Results

    1. #30 – D. Gurney (Porsche 804) 101 Laps (20.346 ext.);
    2. #7 – J. Surtees (Honda RA273) 98 (9.501)*;
    3. #1 – J. Brabham (Brabham BT11) 98 (11.189);

    6. #5 – T. Taylor (Lotus 24) 83 (7.551).
      *-3.0L entries de-tuned to 1.5L standard

    3.0L Grand Prix (180 sec. x 3 x 1 = 9 min.)

    Everyone turned up for this one – including several models…

    …including the Castrol girls to advertise lubricants…

    Jim Clark would suffer handling issues and go backwards from pole – but still managed to hang on to third place… ‘Big John’ Surtees and Bruce McLaren would make it past…

    3.0L Grand Prix Results

    1. #7 – J. Surtees (Honda RA273) 83 Laps (10.510 ext.);
    2. #8 – B. McLaren (Eagle Mk1) 81 (9.595);
    3. #4 – J. Clark (Lotus 49) 78 (12.853);
    4. #22 – J. Siffert (Lotus 49B) 74 (14.677);
    5. #4 – J. Clark (Sr.) (Lotus 49) 71 (4.814);
    6. #5 – J. Clark (Jr.) (Lotus 49) 64 (15.077).

    1970’s Grand Prix (180 sec. x 3 x 1 = 9 min.)

    Trust the French to create a spectacle…

    Ken Tyrrell ultimately preferred the low key approach but kept the blue…

    Stewart would put on a late charge in the debut of his Tyrrell 003 to make it close at the end…

    …and deny the rookie Villeneuve his first ever victory in a McLaren M23…

    Something looks a little odd with that M23 transmission…

    …a strong showing for Tyrrell…

    1970’s Grand Prix Results

    1. #17 – J. Stewart (Tyrrell 003) 87 Laps (7.947 ext.);

    One note about the ‘Race Result’ time line chart to keep in mind – it captures the OVERALL race order at four moments in time from start to finish, not the actual passes nor individual heat results (ie. one can win their last two heats but still be listed in second or third position overall).

    The chart captures the overall result after every heat and since we usually run 3 minute heats the intervals are listed in the chart from Start-3-6-Finish – but if the race was longer (and thereby each heat) to be precise the chart should read Start-4-8-Finish for those longer races – I may change the chart to identify the end of each heat rather than time expired… :mail:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Thank you for your feedback and for asking very good questions that got us all thinking… I had more fun doing that than racing… we’ll schedule “part 2” shortly so stay tuned…

    :scratch:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Since this is the first Scratch32 event for a) Sportscars and b) Classic Era Prototypes and Sportscars (both 5L and 3/2L respectively) we will be a little lenient on the ‘scratch’ component for both of these classes tomorrow night… bring your vintage cars/chassis with you too if they fit a class… also, don’t forget that there are many great cars that ran in the smaller displacement class in both Prototype and Sportscar between 1966 and the early 1970’s which are also eligible… (ie. Abarth…)

    Our grid is beginning to take shape with Bill, Michael, Dave, Doug and myself confirmed so far… :yes:

    The ON-LINE form seems to be working well – so don’t be afraid to use it! :unsure:

    Internationale Meisterschaft im Ring I

    Team transporters were unloaded but the scratch built cars were not the only attraction/distraction…

    Vintage Sportscar (240 sec. x 3 x 1 = 12 min.)

    The Porsche presence in the paddock was overwhelming…

    Vintage Sportscar – Overall Results

    1. #27 – P. O’Malley (Austin Healey 3000 Mk1) 94 Laps (17.459 ext.);
    2. #132 – H. Herrmann (Porsche RS-61) 91 (10.539);

    Vintage Sportscar – Scratch Mid-BWNC1 >80g Class Result

    1. #132 – H. Herrmann (Porsche RS-61) 91 (10.539).

    Paint on the RS-61 was still drying as Hans Herrmann presented his entry to the grid. This 12 minute race would be Hans’ first opportunity to shakedown this model. It was clear as lap times dropped that the RS-61 had a great deal of potential and Hans was all smiles.

    Vintage Sportscar – Scratch Mid-BWMS050 >90g Class Result

    1. #3 – J. Fairman (Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato) 75 (10.174).

    J. Fairman in his beautifully prepared Aston DB4 took his class comfortably with a strong and steady drive all the way to the finish – even battling at times with the BWNC1 powered Porsche 356 of Suhr.

    Classic Era Endurance (240 sec. x 3 x 1 = 12 min.)

    The #22 of Barrios became the first entry to sport a purposely removable driver figure – a blessing for Rafael as he quickly ran to the bathroom after taking the checkered flag.

    Classic Era Endurance – Overall Results

    1. #22 – R. Barrios (Chevron B19) 108 Laps (12.489 ext.);

    As promised, here is the list of reserved racing numbers. First come, first served. If a number(s) is taken just change the number on your model. How you do that I leave up to you. I’ve seen some very creative ways to modify racing numbers over the years so don’t make this more complicated than it needs to be… even if you can’t make it out to this first event you should still get your tires and reserve your number(s) since this list will apply to all future races of this type.

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Hi JMSracer – received your payment for the marked tires so your racing numbers are reserved. Cheers!

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    A marked tire is essential to the simplicity of this exercise but for this first event we can relax that requirement provided every car still has a DArt rear tire. Anyone who presents a car with another tire to race will not be permitted to race and will not be invited back. This may sound harsh but experience has hardened my position on this. So if anyone is in doubt, mount a set of DArts to be sure or just don’t bring that car. Future events will require the marked tire so for some it may be wise to get their tires beforehand especially if they are unsure. Those who pre-pay for their tires will have their chosen racing number(s) reserved.

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    More #’s reserved tonight for this series… 5, 8, 11, 15, 17, 18, 33…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Since there were no conflicts all of the changes were fine and noted in the data sheet above for Porsche911. A number change also for MiA. But why not qualify two cars??? Jimbo added two entries/numbers. Everything up to date as of now. It looks as though we will have the perfect number of participants – 6.

    So far our participants are (in no particular order):

    • Jimbo;
    • Porsche911;
    • MiA;
    • JMSracer;
    • Chubbyvette;
    • ArT

    So we will seed entries by qualifying and then let the ‘bracket’ dictate the event. I did several ‘test’ setups…

    Qualifying results seeded everyone into the first mixed order. The rotation is unlike anything we’ve done in scratch32 or R32 – it is set so that everyone races everyone else at least once every rotation. Then we mix it up and re-order everything in the next rotation. After both rotations the TOTAL result of both rotations determines who travels to the B main and the A main.

    Total race time for everyone, excluding qualifying, is 45 minutes – more than during a typical 4 class race night…. sound good?

    If our number of participants drops to 5 or increases to 7 then I’ll adjust the ‘bracket’…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Entry Chart is all caught up and the entry list is set at 18. Six participants with 3 entries each to qualify…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Porsche911, Do you have the results for the Group 5 race? The software can print a race report to a file in either html or word format, whichever is easier to work with. I need to know the finish order and number of laps before I can update our 2018 pilot standings.

    Thanks for hosting

    With all of the past efforts to help with tire prep by KK and others there doesn’t appear to be much interest in yet another session on this topic – so we might switch this session to: Making Your Suspension (Part I) – Building a Shock Absorber.

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Thanks MiA – we will keep this as planned – Tires 101.

    There is a lot of information provided to those that log in to access it. The “racelaptimes” report from the first heat is very interesting – it reveals much more than I thought even after racing in some of those heats. Fascinating!

    Later on… what the lap times reveal for one competitor is that the floor did not slow the car down – the set screw worked its way loose much later on which did… interesting…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Welcome to my world Porsche911! When Vanski was racing and taking the photos after every race he must have thought the same thing… But you would be surprised at the level of traffic through this site though… Keep up the good work!

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    It never takes much to get sidetracked…

    Cheers! 😉

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    After a number of enquiries please note that for this event there will be NO single lap penalty for every de-slot regardless of fault as there is in Scratch32 events. Doors will open at 9:15am Saturday, qualifying will start at 10:30am and we will be finished by 3pm. We have six participants so far…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    For those of you wondering how to best set up your model for this race – I would recommend a 25k motor in a heavier chassis/setup. If your model is already fast on a track that I’ve built then you should be just fine. Make sure it handles well on nearly flat very high speed corners… no banking, no gimmicks and no squeezes on this track.

    I’ll be there to clean the track on Thursday between 10am and 1pm for those who might wish to drop by to pick up their tires or to practice. Please email me if you wish to come by on Thursday at [email protected] .

    Since many of you will want to practice as soon as you get there on Saturday but still wish to have a brief tour of the facility we can do a tour after the race is over – between 3pm until close… we’ll try to leave the parking out front for their customers – the street to the side is just fine, as is the back lot. I’ll have more details as the date approaches. If you don’t wish to race but would still like to come by to visit and check things out email me at [email protected]   :good:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    For those that need the address for MVL in Oakville here is their website:  MVL Leasing.

    To clarify, I will be there this Thursday between 10am and 1pm only – not later than 1pm… Although the showroom is open to the public during regular business hours visitors who wish to go upstairs to visit the track (or anywhere else) must be accompanied – so please contact me before you come out on Thursday.For anyone who might be interested you can track the races/classes (and results) since R32 began racing at Molto VeLoce by visiting the opening night at MVL on the darthobbies events page. The picture taken above is from opening race night…

    Below is an overview of the track during assembly:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Due to time constraints and to make sure we will wrap up by 3pm we are capping race entries at 8 (1 per participant – so 8 participants maximum). As before every participant may choose to qualify up to three models but must choose just one to race – usually the fastest qualifier but that is up to each participant to decide… :good:

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Joe and f1nutz now have their race numbers added to our master list.

    You must change your mindset for racing in this series.

    You are racing as both a TEAM and as a DRIVER (or PILOT). That doesn’t mean that you can race multiple entries, but you may attempt to qualify multiple entries (up to three – hence the limit of up to three race numbers). To determine the qualifying order the fastest average lap time over a pre-determined number of laps will be used (not simply your fastest lap).

    For instance, every entry/model may get 13 laps (3 warm up and 10 timed laps) and the average of the 10 timed laps determines qualifying position. [The exact number or warm up and timed laps will be set on race day.]

    After qualifying you can choose which of your qualified models you wish to submit to race, but that model will be assigned its first rotation position (or seeded) based on where it qualified relative to the models chosen by other teams. Seeding from qualifying determines the first rotation order – there will be several rotations, each adjusted based on their results to determine which models get to race in the ‘A’ main and which race in the ‘B’ main.  [We will be using the bracketing feature of slottrak to do this automatically since it worked well in the first race of this series – that is why I need to lock down how many participants there will be prior to the event so I can tailor the bracketing structure beforehand to best utilize our available time.]

    For example, there may be 8 participants/teams/pilots. Each participant has three models each with a different race number and they decide to qualify all three models. So 24 models will attempt to qualify but only 8 will race – one from every participant or ‘team’.

    Make sure that the models you intend to qualify (for any race in this series) are each using one of your designated race numbers. As long as the model is of a type that qualifies for this series (check the rules at the top of this thread) then the make or other details for your model are irrelevant and are not permanently fixed to any of your race numbers. What this means is that prior to every race day in this series you can distribute/re-arrange your numbers amongst your models as you wish. So if you have just ONE race number, then if you bring three eligible models all must bear that same number and you can only qualify ONE model. If you have TWO race numbers, then if you bring three eligible models, one bearing the first number and two others bearing the second number then you can attempt to qualify TWO models – ONE bearing the first number and ONE bearing the second number (so you must choose which of the two bearing the second number to qualify – which you would likely do in practice. If you have THREE race numbers then you can qualify up to THREE models as long as they each bear a different number.

    Why would anyone only have one or two race numbers? Because they only purchased one or two sets of the mandatory orange dot tires, therefore they could only have one or two eligible entries.

    All that matters on race day is that any eligible model you intend to qualify has one of your race numbers on it. For timing & scoring the number is the primary tracking method during each race. Your initials are also paired together with each of your race numbers as a secondary tracking method – this for the benefit of those in attendance…

    Whichever model starts the race must finish the race. Substitutions are not allowed. Although this is not an endurance event our first edition saw every pilot/model race for a total of 45 minutes – so reliability is important. If a team does suffer a mechanical breakdown then another qualified model may be used to complete the race but that team will be scored with a DNF and while lapping must not impede others.

    How do I change the number on my model?

    Any method is allowed but ALL numbers on the model must be changed to the new number and must remain in place for the duration of the event. Most cars had at least three numbers, usually four.

    Remember in those days that the cars would arrive at the venue without numbers. Some had roundels painted – but they were blank. Numbers were assigned based on registration order and then painted or taped. That is why you would often see consecutive numbers for every ‘team’.

    You can use a sticker to cover the old number, add a piece of coloured tape to alter the number, use a marker – anything. I don’t care as long as the number is easy to read and remains in place for the whole race.

    On my slot.it GT40 body I removed the tampo printed number using a Q-tip with Tamiya course compound. You can also scrape away the tampo number on many models… On another model I used a VERY quick application of Acetone on a Q-tip to remove the number and roundel (I don’t recommend doing this if you have not done this before or don’t know how the paint will respond – it will eat through the paint – but it is a fast way to remove the tampo.). All were replaced with decals. How you do this is up to you.

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    I’ve been persuaded that we make the transition to orange dot tires for this second running of the Classic Era Challenge a little more forgiving than ‘mandatory’ to encourage more qualifying models…. therefore:

    Every participant/team (each of you who registered above) that purchased orange dot tires for this event AND presents at least one model/entry with orange dot tires for the qualifying round MAY enter additional models/entries (up to two) using the standard DArt club tire… and ANY of those qualifiers are therefore eligible to race…

    Cheers!

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    Several joined us to clean and condition the track today – a hearty thank you to everyone!

    As I and Austin were leaving the ‘Cash Man’ joined us upstairs – he is hilarious!

    Posters and door prizes are ready to go.

    The game room upstairs within which we race has several amenities – a kitchen too so bring anything that you plan to drink or eat with you – there are no vending machines with food or drinks though – just pinball machines – so if you don’t bring it you ain’t consuming it unless you go out to get it yourself. It does get warm upstairs so make sure you wear something comfortable.

    When you arrive please remember to park to the sides of the parking lot, or, preferably on the street next to MVL or rear lot. When you enter you can let any staff know that you are there for a race upstairs. They’ll just roll their eyes and get back to work… Turn left and walk towards the side of the showroom past the row of cars. Keep going till you pass the washrooms and then you will see a staircase lined with paintings going upstairs – just follow the stairs…

    If for some reason you have a problem with a tire or one of your planned entries please email me to see what can be done – the point of this exercise is to come together and have fun that is fair for everyone – often a work-a-round can accommodate a last minute unforeseen issue… so never despair – don’t throw in the towel – just ask…

    I’ll see everyone tomorrow!

    Those of you who don’t regularly check our website should take advantage of the ‘subscribe’ option in the first message header to find out what is new…

    The Happy Canadian Scale Modeler!

    If anyone might be interested I’m selling my #22 (really #12 under the stickers) 908/3 entry that I raced on Saturday – either complete & as is (not even opened or cleaned after the race) or bare chassis with motor & guide – your choice – exclusive to those who raced on Saturday and/or participate in scratch32 or R32 events. Please note that in the scratch32 group there is a minimum threshold of ‘building’ – you may only present models with a body OR chassis that YOU built – but for events like this one anything goes – so clean it and race it if you wish…

    I’ll post the results in the R32 Race Results sub-forum later today or tonight as soon as I have a chance to. Thanks again to everyone who came out! Jim and Joe forgot their door prizes – I’ll set them aside till I see each of you next…

    Hi Joe, glad to hear that – I’m putting together the summer schedule and I’m looking at early May at MVL for the next one – I hope to have the complete calendar sorted out next week… stay tuned…

    There will be four races:

    • Three R32 classes (HR, SP/SP+ & 70GP); and
    • One IROC with cars provided by the host TBD.

    Please remember to bring at least two cars for every R32 class and you may choose to race either an SP or SP+ in the Sportscar race (but results will be separate for these classes – if you have one of each then perhaps you might be able to race both in two separate races – time permitting).

    Race results will be posted by the host in this thread (when available) – no new ‘topic’ will be created – so check back often.

    This little Autobianchi Giliberti A112 is similar in size to an original Mini (in fact the body is a modified Honda N360 ARII kit) and thus some of the advantages/features of my 1/32 standard setup block can’t be used – which made for more fun in the end. Regardless, this ugly duckling now has a chassis. In the company of a couple of Scratch32ians we got this simple chassis soldered together using .055″ wire and a few brass pieces. Bearings were used in lieu of oilite bushings on the back and we soldered them in place to cut down build time. After the party was over I added the raised rear body mount brace and a piece of wire atop the front axle holder – then cut off and trimmed all of the excess – and cleaned and scrubbed everything with some Comet followed by a polish using both a wire wheel (low speed) and sandpaper on some brass pieces. I also oiled the bearings. This basic chassis weighs in at exactly 9.0g.

    As you can see this chassis was designed to accommodate a Ninco guide & FF050 motor (in particular a Vanski ‘low’ power motor) in a mid-inline configuration (there isn’t any room to do anything else) and to keep things light we kept bracing to a minimum. After assembly and testing with the body on we will find out whether or not we need to add a little weight – perhaps a small rattle plate underneath the chassis – but we’ll see… a big thank you to Jimbo & MiA for their helpful comments and supportive company. :good:

    …and with body mounted to the rolling chassis to test ride height and clearances – everything is fine – body lowered a bit but not slammed – I could easily drop the front end down considerably (and the back too) but that would not reflect the stance of the original. Time for the body to go to paint prep and the chassis on to final assembly… (to be continued in the scratch building sub forum later in the week)
