    • 1:28 Decals For Mini Z decals I've found: MZ Decals from Japan - if you can find them - excellent quality - check Japanese online retailers - I ordered and received a set for the green and white 'efini' Mazda 787B from Studio27; Print Lab Decals - on demand - not sure about the quality since I haven't ordered any yet - but a little pricey - available from SpotModel - they have a good selection of GT3 sets and one Sauber Mercedes C9 set with both the YSL & Michelin liveries; Pattos Place - all of his water slide and vinyl decals are available in 1:28 (for the 1:24 price) - and are well priced around $14AU - email your order and ask for them in 1:28 - pay via paypal - he now has improved waterslide silk ink or laser sharp versions in addition to his vinyl - I just ordered all 3 sets in the laser sharp waterslide for the 1998 & 1999 Toyota GT One so I'll find out how good they really are after they arrive and report back here. If you find any 1:28 decals anywhere else please let us know and provide links too. Hope this helps your Mini Z journey... Cheers!

    • Spray Booth Number Three My first spray booth was the basement kitchen fan with a big cardboard box. Overspray wasn't an issue since the basement was eventually going to be renovated. I painted about 60+ cars before having to make changes. After the renovations, I moved the spray area closer to the kitchen window. But the fan was actually higher in the room than the kitchen fan, and was less effective even with a much bigger fan. It moved the smelly air out of the room. But the overspray dust was like a cloud slowly moving to the floor. Let's just agree that it was a total failure. I painted one or two HO cars, and decided to undo everything. It was either outside, or nothing now. I needed to use gravity to my advantage. So far it's been working against me. I bought a wardrobe box from U-Haul for $19.95. It measures 24"x24"x48" inches closed. 60" inches tall with the top flaps open. It barely fits in the shower stall. I installed two 6" inch vents at the back to evacuate the fumes. A plywood plate was cut to perfectly fit into the window slot. Two 6" inch metal joiners were glued into the plywood plate for the flexible hose. The shower has a plastic drop-sheet lining the entire thing. You can't be too safe. I have hanging lights on both sides so I can see properly. Blocks were glued to keep the flaps open. The evacuation vents had to be staggered because they didn't quite fit beside each other. When the booth isn't being used. The plate and flexible ductwork are at rest beside the sink. It was finished last night. Ted came over with an unpainted Pioneer Mustang today, and the booth is an absolute success. The overspray cloud falls to the bottom of the box. Nothing escapes into the washroom itself except barely a light smell. You can't smell the fumes outside the washroom door with the door wide open. Perfect. The power for the booth comes from an old 24" inch fan. It moves enough air to easily dilute the fumes. I need to watch that I don't leave it running too long after painting. It removes a lot of warmth from the house very quickly. Thank you very kindly for looking.

    • Alfa Romeo at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana Alfa Romeo at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana - by MiA - As Art was kind enough to set up a blog for my meanderings I felt I should give it a go. What to write about, how long should it be? Perhaps I could use a blog as an excuse to dig a little more into subjects I was interested in, and if anyone else learned a bit, then so much the better. Of course the first one would have to be a subject near and dear to my heart (and so as if you didn’t know) Alfa Romeos! But what Alfa story? As the company with the oldest racing history there are so many stories. So, where to start?? Lets just choose a convenient and timely one, the upcoming Carrera Panamericana proxy race. Over the five years that the race was held there were many Alfas to write about, both factory and private entries.  For a first go lets just use the alternate photo posted for the upcoming proxy race. Easy, a bit obscure, quite pedestrian and definitely all Alfa!! I’m sure Art put it in for my benefit!! [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="911"] Monumento de la Revolition[/caption] A little bit of background on the Carrera Panamericana first. In 1950, Mexico became the first Latin-American country to complete its part of the Pan-American Highway. To celebrate this achievement, the national government decided to organize a five-day race along the new road. It consisted of a total of 9 stages and ran from Ciudad Juárez on the US border to the Guatemalan border. The original version of the Carrera Panamericana was held from 1950 to 1954 and during its short existence it developed a reputation for being one of the most dangerous races in the world. Due to the start line being close to the US, most of the cars and drivers for the first 1950 race came from the US. The first winners were an American team of Hershel McGriff and Ray Elliott in an Oldsmobile 88. From the second edition onwards, the route was switched, going from the southern to the northern border. Over the ensuing years competition grew and attracted more teams from abroad. Along with most American manufacturers and many ‘specials’, Ferrari, Lancia, Porsche, Borgward, Alfa Romeo, Austin Healey, OSCA, Jaguar, Mercedes, Talbot Lago, Gordini, VW and Pegaso all sent or supported teams headlined with seasoned road, track and rally drivers. Of particular interest here is the 1954 race and the picture used for the alternate in the upcoming proxy races announcement. (Hopefully Alfas from other years will follow in later posts). 1954 was the last of the original races and the picture was taken in front of the Monumento de la Revolition in Mexico City, probably sometime after the third day of racing or just before the start of the fourth day. The Monumento de la Revolition commemorates the independence of Mexico from Spain. It is located in Plaza de la República, near to the heart of major thoroughfares in downtown Mexico City. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="511"] Monumento de la Revolition[/caption] The structure was initially intended to be at the centre of the Federal Legislature and the first stone was laid in 1910 during the centennial celebrations of Independence. The project was not finished due to the Mexican Revolutionary War and after several regime changes in 1913 it was cancelled and abandoned. It’s steel inner structure stood rusting for more than twenty years. Later it was proposed to convert the abandoned structure into a monument to the heroes of the Mexican Revolution. After this was approved, the structure began its makeover. Four stone sculpture groups were designed and built over the existing cupola structure. The structure also functions as a mausoleum for the heroes of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. It was eventually completed around 1938. For the 1954 running there were thirteen Alfas entered. Eleven participated and 2 were listed as Did Not Arrive. Quite possibly these are four of the five cars entered by Finmeccanica. The 5th Finmeccanica entered car is possibly the car to the right in the photograph. Like many of the early automobile manufacturers Alfa Romeo had gone through turbulent times since it’s inception. Ugo Gobbato the head of Alfa Romeo in 1945 had been shot and killed by an unknown gunman as he cycled to work. Thus after WW2 Alfa thus found itself without a leader and with most of its factories destroyed by the war. A new chairman, Pasquale Gallo, was appointed to demilitarize Alfa Romeo, and responsibility for design was handed to the engineer Orazio Satta Puliga. He made significant contributions towards re-launching Alfa Romeo into a new era. After introducing several upscale models based on pre war models, in 1950 he introduced the Alfa Romeo 1900, a family car that would be capable of winning races. Modern and practical, Puliga considered the 1900 to be the ultimate choice for the middle class. It offered great performance and a heritage of brilliant sporting achievements at a competitive price. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="781"] Alfa Romeo 1900 Sedan (Berlina)[/caption] The Alfa Romeo 1900 was produced from 1950 to 1959. It was an important development for Alfa, being it’s first car built entirely on a production line and it’s first production car without a separate chassis. The Engine was a 1.9 L DOHC Inline 4, developing 90 bhp, which was later enlarged to 2.0L It was produced in several variants, a 4-door saloon (Berlina), a 2-door coupé (Sprint) and a 2-door convertible. It was the first Alfa Romeo offered with left-hand drive. After introduction it was later offered as a 1900C(Short) and then as a 1900TI with a more powerful motor producing 100bhp. Later came Super and Super Ti versions. A total of 21,304 were built during the production run, including 17,390 of the saloons. The chassis was designed specifically to allow it to be re-bodied and several coachbuilders developed some beautiful variants, including a 4-wheel drive version (Matta) based on the 1900. Finmeccanica, the entrant of the cars we are interested in was established in 1948 as part of the efforts by Italy's government-controlled industrial holding company IRI (Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale) to restructure Italy’s devastated industrial and engineering sector after the war. IRI had itself taken over effective control of Alfa around 1928 when Nicola Romeo left the company. After it’s establishment Finmeccanica effectively became Alfa Romeo’s parent company until it sold Alfa to the Fiat Group in 1986. The 1954 race was run from south to north over 8 stages and 3,070 kilometres (1,910 mi). 150 cars started the race, and 85 finished all 8 stages. The European stock car class was won by Consalvo Sanesi and Giuseppe Cagna in Alfa Romeo #251 finishing 15th overall. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="438"] 1900 Motor[/caption] [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="414"] Finned Aluminium Brake Drum[/caption] [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="464"] Finishing Line[/caption] Other Alfa finishers were car # 256 driven by Mantovani / Chiappa finishing 18th overall, car # 267 driven by Della Favera / Campigotto finishing 19th overall, car # 255 driven by Carini / Sambrotta finishing 20th overall, car # 252 driven by Velazquez / Ruiz finishing 30th overall. Car # 268 driven by Bonini / Zanavoni was a DNF due to an accident. All considered, an excellent showing for Alfa. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="435"] Consalvo Sanesi and Giuseppe Cagna[/caption] [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="370"] Carini/Sambrota in car #255[/caption] [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="418"] The Velazquez / Ruiz car[/caption] [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="412"] The Velazquez / Ruiz car[/caption] There are several good smaller scale models of most of the cars that participated in the 1954 race, but I haven’t found a 1/32 scale kit that could be used as the basis for an S32 car …yet. • Dailey Hobbies, Whitby, Ontario I had an opportunity to visit Dailey Hobbies in Whitby. They have lots of cool stuff like at least 25-Group C models in 1/24 scale ranging from $43 to $49. They also had lots of Fujimi kits just above the $40 mark. Nice selection and prices. https://www.daileyhobbies.com/index.htm I really didn't need anything. But, this 1/24 Lamborghini was only $40. I've always wanted one without that silly wing. I swear it was calling my name.

    • Painting More Inserts Painted some inserts for a fellow slot enthusiast: Black isn't just black. Use a subtle dirt wash on the sides of the four spokes. Bring out your wire detail... if you don't want to sand out the detail you can use a wash: Spray with aluminium. Brush on flat black diluted 50/50 with iso alc. Brush on a dirt wash 50/50. Chrome knock off raised centre ring and tips only. DArt 450WIRE3KO wire wheel inserts were used. Customized 4 spoke McLaren 490 Inserts are made using 450LOT4SPKO with the centre knock off removed and 490ADAPTER added (fixed in place using 5 min. epoxy). These will fit standard Slot.It wheels now. Visit the DArt eSHOP for these inserts.

    • The Zing II Version II of the Zing debuted last Saturday: This version incorporates a few lessons learned from the first one along with some new features. I also abandoned a few ideas I had after building the original... Made from painted RAM board this portable track has an approximate footprint of 17' x 8' and despite the small size and simple layout it packs a lot of racing fun in the space. With a half turn of each of the border wall barrier screws the borders themselves can be removed and the track rolled up so that it can be put away or transported. Slide the borders into the 8' long roll and it all fits neatly into a minivan or SUV... As for the track itself average track width is 30" - more than enough. Track borders are made from 7/8" high painted flexi-ply covered with non-marking 2mm black and white EVA foam which was hot glued to the flexi-ply. The walls follow the contour of the track therefore impacts tend to be glancing, not head on. For this reason thicker foam padding wasn't used especially at the ends of the layout but can be added if further testing warrants. Time will tell. The borders are fixed to the cardboard edges by sliding them onto the cardboard and then tightening the screw in each mounting block - one per block - each spaced roughly 12" apart - so that the screw bites into the cardboard pressing it against the base of the block itself. Remarkably these borders still have some flex too. Two sets of curbs define two racing lines - one more challenging than the other - use all of the same ones or mix them up. Movable red/white and black/white tire stacks placed inside either curb section deter short-cutting. While the red/white inner curbing uses 'bumpy' 2mm thick EVA foam the outer black/white curbs are just painted. Curbs on the outside of the main straight also provide a safe lane for slower cars to allow faster ones to pass so dealing with lapped traffic should be straightforward especially on such a short track. The flat acrylic paint offers the perfect amount of grip - not too much to flip a car. This track is somewhat bumpy but not at the seams. I made the mistake of painting it AFTER joining the sections... if you paint the board then join them you will get a smooth surface. Joints were made by adding a 5" wide painted strip of the same RAM board on the underside of the joint and both halves of the track were stuck snuggly together on top. Duct tape was also used underneath on both long edges of the 5" strip. I'm happy with the seams - and added a few to test other techniques - including some sloppy ones to see if they had any adverse impact. So far not... The bumps that exist are gentle 'rolling' ones and therefore manageable - they don't upset the direction of the car since the tires never lose contact with the surface - so no sudden changes in direction or unpredictable behaviour. It is fascinating to me to see the suspension do what it was designed to. I find it quite pleasing to watch the model negotiate an imperfectly flat track surface. This track runs well in both directions although my preferred direction is counter-clockwise. There is no pit lane yet but one can be added easily... we'll see... For timing I used the Android app 'LapTrax' which uses the camera and tracks cars by colour as they cross the start/finish line - it works fine so far but this isn't a long term solution. When the time comes I'm leaning towards using EasyLap hardware with micro transponders. Trakmate has a timing solution as well but I'm not that keen to use it myself for several reasons. After all of the moveable/removable tire stack clusters are added scenery will be made for the infield and then billboards to surround the outside corners then some sort of pit area/grandstand detail - whether pictures or lightweight facade... stay tuned... provided I don't head straight into the table top version next... perhaps a combined 1:24 slot car track and Mini-Z track... who knows... While racing the 1:27.5 Group C and GT models is a great start I see adapting 1:24 model kits to the Mini-Z platform as the future - Classic LeMans but RC 1:24 scale!!! Imagine!!! A Porsche 917/10 head to head against a Ferrari 512 Coda Lunga... hmmmm... who says it can't be done?

    • Mini-Z Light Kit Socket Mapping and Connector For anyone interested in making their own Mini-Z light kit here is a pin map for the onboard ZH 1.5mm 4 pin light socket: Remember that the headlight circuit is controlled by a trim knob on the KT531P transmitter which can adjust the headlight LEDs from a slow flashing to constant on while the brake circuit is controlled by the throttle trigger which makes the red tail lights become brighter when the brakes are applied. You can find the connector on Amazon which comes with pre-crimped wires: 3mm 3v LEDs seem to be the best bet for most head/tail lamp openings. You can use them without adding resisters. Since they don't draw much power you can add as many as you want. Experimenting with other power sources (from the gyro socket or any other onboard tabs) may give interesting LED options even if those additional circuits would need to include a resister.

    • RWD LM 102mm (3L) to 98mm (LL) wheelbase conversion Ok so I had some time today to experiment a little so I decided to try and convert my LM chassis to fit an Acura NSX MM body. It took about an hour to do and the only modification I had to make was to remove about 2mm of plastic from the front edge of the shock restrictor plate hole. Suspension travel is minimal but the wheelbase now fits! I also swapped the wheels and reassembled the LM/MM T plate in the MM position. We’ll see how it runs next time we do a test session.

    • Upcoming ’70/’71 Targa Florio Not sure where to put this as there does not seem to be an 'Upcoming Events' Forum, so 'here' it is. Looks like another great event coming up soon, the '70/'71 Targa Florio!! Authentic livery specific!! An era when some of my favourite cars (Alfa's and Porsche's, big surprise there) and drivers (Vic Elford, Jo Siffert, Brian Redman, Masten Gregory, Pedro Rodriguez, Jo Bonnier, Mike Parkes, ..... ) were dominating. (Not showing my age am I??) To that end, so far I've one of each, the #20 Porsche 908/3 driven by Elford/Herrmann (what a great livery for that car) and the #2 Alfa T33/3 driven by Adamich/Lennep to a 2nd place in 1971. (Red, but what else for a factory Alfa) The Porsche is a basically stock Fly with gear and tires, very nice to drive but a bit limited by it's motor! The Alfa is a great car -GLH- and if Mr. 2.4 doesn't have an appropriate car perhaps he will race it for me!!?? See you all there.

    • Rolexing at The Rock! (As originally written and posted by KK) It’s been a long offseason for the 1:1 racing cars but this weekend things got rolling again as the long anticipated 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship kicked off with the Rolex 24 Hrs at Daytona. This year saw the introduction of the exciting new DPi class in a race hampered by weather. As a tribute to years gone by, we decided to hold a historic Rolex Special race of our own for the 1/32 scale models we race here at The RockenheimRing in Barrie. Our day was also hampered slightly by weather but that didn’t stop ten of the finest and most dedicated racers around from attending todays event by way of snow covered roads. We had a few last minute drop-outs but still a near record crowd was in attendance for an R32 race of late. Barrie Police showed up early on to control the overflow of parking and thankfully that was the last we saw of them today. No doubt they will be back. I think my neighbours may have them on Speed Dial. Could be from the incident involving their house being bombarded with eggs, but that’s another story. The police showed up here saying that all the guest that were leaving my “live band deck party” threw eggs at the house across the street, I excused myself for a moment, checked the fridge and came back to the door to report to the officer, it couldn’t have been my guests, we have No Eggs! Now back to the racing coverage. The biggest stories out of the pit garage were, FORD winning the GTLM class at Daytona today but were given a new acronym up here in Canada. That along with James Dean dieing for a second time were the the two big stories out of the garage along with Switchgate, MV back in action and some new racers climbing the podium at The Rock for the first time. These stories and more later.   50’s 60’s Sportscars ( 3 heats x 180 seconds = 9 minutes) The home team broke away from the pack slightly in this one while the competition got familiar with the track layout. Some very close racing in this one, notably 3rd through 8th place separated by just two laps. JM took the 2nd place spot with a real nice outing for his King Cobra and our good friend Devo took the third step with a big block chevy loaner from the home team with SR, FC, MV, DO and MA hot on his heals. The well rounded field of entries circled the track while the Classic LeMans cars were prepared in the background. JCB-James Dean’s Porsche 550 was seen in the garage for most of the race due to a broken guide flag holder. People around the scene were noted as saying “That’s the second time James Dean died in that car”   Classic LeMans Cars 1965-1970 ( 3 heats x 180 seconds = 9 minutes) This was a close finish with the two top spots separated by under a second. Some of the the top drivers on the circuit were absent due to the weather and this along with the rain kept the crowds from filling the grandstand. Those that showed up were treated to a thrilling race. The Home Team edged out JCB by less than a second and JCB took his first steps up the podium at the Ring. A small detour through the rhubarb thwarted his otherwise relentless pace and the older 250LM squeaked by to take the narrow victory. Whispers of “Switchgate” were heard by other racers in the paddock as JCB was certain that someone threw his lane direction switch in hopes his tires and pace would be cooled. Talk about icing a kicker! All of the banter coming out of the garage about MV’s FORD GT 40 crash and clearing the wall quickly diffused all the talk about Switchgate and got the heat off of yours truly. The roars of laughter could be heard far and wide as the new acronym for FORD was created – FOUND ON RUG DEAD! Ford may have had a great day at Daytona today but they were the butt of the funniest jokes here today. Devo wound up on the third step of the podium again with a loaner Porsche from the home team. SR, FC, MV, DO, MA. JM and TR all had strong outings in this one.     Group C/IMSA ( 3 heats x 180 seconds = 9 minutes) The third race of the day was the mighty Group C cars. These beautiful machines are favorites of many and this race provided the closest finish of the day. JCB took his first victory at The Rock and by the narrowest of margins driving his appropriately named BOSS Porsche to victory. Less than two tenths of a second separated the top two racers and the top 8 places were separated by only two laps. SR had the race in hand until the third heat where a cut tire saw him spin out repeatedly. He managed to limp his car to a third place finish and his first podium finish at the Rock. You could have thrown a blanket over third through seventh with the rest of the pack nipping at their heels. See the photos below, it was that close!   The Rolex Special (Any Commercially available Group C, Daytona Prototype, Lola T600, Porsche Kremer CK5 with 25k S-Can motor) ( 3 heats x 240 seconds = 12 minutes) These beautiful machines filled the pit lane as all participants were allowed to race as many as three cars in this race. The intensity of running these faster cars got to some as these high RpM machines generate incredible speeds on the long straights of The Ring. MA had a short circuiting brand new motor in his primary car and was forced to run his beautiful back-up Crown Royal DP car just minutes before the race. Controllers were hooked up incorrectly and all kinds spinouts made this a race of attrition. In the end it was home track advantage that showed through as the home team cruised to victory. We’re not sure yet if any track lap records were broken but they were certainly approached by the Rothmans Porsche 962 and Lola T600. JM took a familiar second step on the podium and TR after a great run took the third step, his first at The Ring. Second through fifth were separated by only two laps. Thanks to all who attended and participated today. This was truly a wonderful race event and it was good to see some former racers and friends out on a not so wonderful day, weather wise. We had few laughs, a few pops and rubbed a few fenders and I still have plenty of eggs in my fridge. Good times! Hope to see you all again soon. Cheers KK

    • Classic Era Challenge I (1966-1971) – February 2, 2018 @ The Ring It doesn't get any simpler than this for those of you who just want to go fast with any ready to run NSR, Slot.It or other manufacturer's model or build your own to race - any motor, any chassis, any configuration and hardly any rules - a mandatory marked tire will keep it fair but the rest is up to each of you. Want to race your NSR out of the box just with tires? Go for it. Want to tune the crap out of your NSR? Go for it. Want to build your own torsion or rattle pan chassis? Go for it. Want to race your hand wound motor? Go for it. Don't want to read too many rules? Great! Can't read? Don't worry... Like to argue over rules? Too bad - nothing to argue about here... Almost anything goes. Simple Rules & Guidelines Open to any Prototype (P) or Sportscar (S), regardless of displacement, that competed between 1966 and 1971 in any endurance race which was part of the World Sportscar Championship or International Championship sanctioned by the FIA. By endurance race we mean a race lasting many hours (ie. 24, 12, 6) or over a large distance (ie. 1000k). Headlights are not a requirement (if the model raced did not have them) nor must headlights be functional. Bodies must be hard plastic/resin with period appropriate (actual or fantasy) livery. No two entries may have the same race number. Race numbers will be reserved or assigned (see below). Interiors may be made from any material. There is no minimum level of detail required by either a body or interior but attention to detail will always be appreciated. Rear tires must be marked Darts for this event/series and will be available in the following sizes: D11, SI0201 (or NC0102) and NC0101. This event is open to any adult with an eligible model and controller. Any model that compromises the track for others in any way will not be permitted or will be removed from the track. Reserving Your Race Number & Purchasing Marked DArts One (1) number may be reserved or will be assigned (absent a request) for each pair of marked DArt tires purchased up to a maximum of 3 per participant regardless of how many pair of marked DArts are purchased by anyone. Numbers will be reserved or confirmed upon receipt of payment (pickup may be on a later date or even at the event). The deadline to purchase your DArts (or reserve your racing number(s)) will be midnight the day prior to the event. Multiple models may qualify but only the top entry for each participant will advance. NO loaners or substitutions after qualifying has begun and all models will be impounded from that point on. Contact me to order/purchase your marked DArt tires by email: [email protected]. NEW Format: All models must either qualify or advance through elimination heats to make it to the A main for a chance to win or place in this event/series. Starting position will be assigned by random draw and all participants will have an opportunity to qualify for or advance all the way to the A main. Since this is FREE there will be no guaranteed minimum number of minutes raced. The number of participants will dictate the exact format chosen. More Information, including a list of reserved (or available) race numbers, will be found below. Right now, all numbers, including three digit numbers, are available. Looking forward hopefully this can become a series hosted at other tracks too, perhaps on a monthly basis. For now we will start next Friday here at The Ring... :good: Please spread this link around to everyone who you believe may wish to participate regardless of with whom or where they raced in the past or present. Everyone is welcome.

    • R32 V – Spa-Lyons – January 3, 2018 – Ringing in the New Year at Spa! After a long hiatus, 5 fickle fingers of fate returned to Spa on January 3rd 2018. Pedigrees and pedicures were de rigueur, as they should be at a Spa session. Alas, the Greektown customs agents delayed the arrival of 1 intrepid racer, suspected of travelling with a formerly suspect controller. Nastycab rumbl'd 'N'rubbed the 1st clash of the evening, and the good ol' boys had a Hee Haw of a time. Now to them thar pictures

    • Classic Era Challenge III (1966 – 1971) – August 10, 2018 @ The Ring After some head scratching, a few postponements and a venue change it is finally time to get the ball rolling for Round III. Due to the season a smaller turnout is expected which means that those who do attend will get much more racing in... so in the famous words of Whitesnake - 'Here we go again':Over the next few days I'll post the # list we have so far along with event details. The rules are pretty simple - any model with a hard body/shell that competed in an endurance race during this period whether RTR, 'unobtainium', made by NASA or pulled from thin air with DArt 'Orange Dot' club urethane tires. Should anyone need orange dot tires please let me know. If you do not yet have your racing #s or if you have any other questions this is the topic to reply to.

    • Classic Era Challenge IV (1966-1971) – October 27, 2018 Gentlemen, it is time once again for the fourth edition of our Classic Era Challenge Cup (1966 - 1971) this Saturday, October 27, 2018 @ Molto VeLoce (MVL). The rules remain the same. Mandatory orange dot DArt club urethane tires on the rear wheels AND hard plastic body that raced in a period endurance race with any period fantasy livery ARE REQUIRED. The rest is up to you... any material... RTR or scratch... Simple Rules & Guidelines v1.0 – January, 2018 1)      Open to any Prototype (P) or Sportscar (S), regardless of displacement, that competed between 1966 and 1971 in any endurance race which was part of the World Sportscar Championship or International Championship sanctioned by the FIA. By endurance race we mean a race lasting many hours (ie. 24, 12, 6) or over a large distance (ie. 1000k). Headlights are not a requirement (if the model raced did not have them) nor must headlights be functional. 2)      Bodies must be hard plastic/resin with period appropriate (actual or fantasy) livery. No two entries may have the same race number. Race numbers will be reserved or assigned (see below). 3)      Interiors may be made from any material. There is no minimum level of detail required by either a body or interior but attention to detail will always be appreciated. 4)      Rear tires must be marked Darts for this event/series and will be available in the following sizes: D11, SI0201 (or NC0102) and NC0101. 5)      This event is open to any adult with an eligible model and controller. 6)      Any model that compromises the track for others in any way will not be permitted or will be removed from the track. Format: All models must either qualify or advance through elimination heats to make it to the A main for a chance to win or place in this event/series. Starting position will be assigned by random draw and all participants will have an opportunity to qualify for or advance all the way to the A main. Since this is FREE there will be no guaranteed minimum number of minutes raced. The number of participants will dictate the exact format chosen. So, you may qualify up to three models but must choose one to race. Remember to use your assigned numbers for those models you wish to qualify. Timed practice will start at 10:00am... followed by qualifying and then the race. Here is our list of registered numbers: [table id=6 /] To register: [seatt-form event_id=31] If you have any questions please ask within this thread... Good Luck! :good:

    • R32 XXXV @ Spa-Lyons – February 24, 2020 On a chilly February evening, and for the second time this decade, teams loaded up their transporters for the journey to Spa-Lyons. Teams arrived to find the track already alive with spectators, many who had come to cheer on their favourite who was scheduled to debut the new Rover BRM turbine car. Spectators and media had assumed the best possible locations. Even Bib was trying to get in on the show. Track regulars Bill and Sally were back at Hot Tub Corner again, but mindful of the stir created by them during the last race meeting, the Woman’s White Cross League were there in their proper skirts and practical loafers, attempting (somewhat futilely perhaps) to preserve virtuous behaviour for all of mankind!! As the evening began, drivers seemed unusually well behaved (perhaps it was the lack of a NASCAR event) and things started off smoothly with a 50’s Vintage race. After a very gentlemanly race with few incidents, Robert Manzon in his beautiful Gordini T-32, relived his triumphant finish in the GP of Reims and showed the field the way home with 63 laps. He was followed one lap later (62) by ‘The Pampas Bull’ Jose Froilan Gonzalez, showing the Italian flag and driving the same Ferrari 375 he had driven to victory in the 1951 Silverstone GP. Two laps back with 60 was Snidley Whiplash in his beautiful turquoise Maserati 250F. With 58 laps, and in his reserve Ferrari D50, was Juan Manuel Fangio with 58 laps. Next up on the schedule were sports cars. A mixed bag representing a wide range of eras took to the track. A Jaguar XK120 fresh from the Alpen Rally led the field with 61 laps, followed by a 1965 Rover BRM driven by crowd favourite Sir Jackie Stewart only 5 seconds behind in second. Punching well above it’s class, the VW Beetle 1200 DeLuxe of Manuel Hinke, fresh (??) from it’s running in the 1954 Carrera Panamericana finished a distant 3rd with 57 laps, but showing it's heels to an even older 1950 Ferrari 166 MM/212 “Uovo” driven by Giannino ‘the tailor’ Marzotto that finished with 56 laps. With 52 laps, the 1966 Porsche 904 GTS of George Follmer and Peter Gregg that ran in the 1966 Sebring 12 hours followed along after a very tidy run. Sir Jackie’s result sent many of the elated fans scurrying to open a fresh Tripel Karmeliet and racing was paused so all could enjoy the moment. After a break and a delicious chocolate cupcake sugar fix courtesy of Johnathan the drivers were back at it in Vintage Lemans cars. A lone Ferrari 512S Coda Lunga in very un-Italian silver led an almost all Porsche grid to the chequered flag with a blistering 68 laps. It was followed 3 laps later by a Porsche 907 LH in livery as raced in the 1968 24H of Daytona piloted by Jo Siffert & Hans Hermann. It was followed 2 laps later by a Porsche 917K from the 1970 24 Hrs. of Lemans and driven by Gijs Van Lennep & David Piper with 63 laps. Next along with 62 laps was a 1971 Porsche 917LH  in Martini livery that was raced by Gérard Larrousse & Vic Elford. A 1969 Targa Florio liveried Porsche 907K piloted by Hans Dieter Dechent and Gerhard Koch rounded out the field with 57 laps. The evening ended with CanAm cars roaring to life. After many enlightening trips past Hot Tub Corner the McLAREN M8D sponsored by Paul Newman Racing and as driven by  Bob Bondrant at the 1971 series opening race at Mosport easily outclassed the field with a scorching 73 laps. Eating tire dust all the way home, the team of an Alfa Romeo T33/4 driven by Scooter Patrick and sponsored  by West Coast Distributor Otto Zipper Alfa and  a Chaparral 2E as  piloted by Phil Hill at the 1966 Mosport Can-Am trailed in 6 laps later with 67 circuits. A McLaren M20 piloted by Denny Hulme was further back with 64 laps and having a few mechanical issues a 1974 McLaren M20 Interseries car piloted by privateer Mark Kelleners finished with 58 laps. A 1971 Sebring liveried Alfa Romeo T33/3 liveried as driven by Nino Vaccarella and Tony Heinzman finished with 57 laps. To the victors went the champagne as they were all toasted appropriately, in the finest time honoured tradition. It was great to return again to Spa-Lyons. Thanks to our host Drew and his wife Nancy for their hospitality on a brisk February evening!

    • Bass-Seca Build Bass-Seca After who knows how many years of racing at multiple home and club tracks, my man cave has gotten a new addition built by Art! A small but exciting looking layout of approximately 44 feet for 1:32 racing with plenty of elevation changes themed after Laguna Seca's "Corkscrew". I gave my design to track builder extraordinaire Professor Tschinkel earlier this year and, thanks to Covid restrictions, he built a modular track that could be fairly quickly taken apart and reassembled. Art built the basics at his place and then disassembled it and into a VW Atlas went ALL the pieces and reassembly began at my place. Track reconstruction, lane taping, power and computer, border walls and more now done. Some detail work still to be completed but the track is now operational and the first race done with Joe Guts and I running Group 5 cars. But the track is much more fun with the slower classes! Before racing ever happened though I christened the track with laps done in remembrance, and with cars, from racers who are no longer with us. John F and Paddy you will always be remembered. (The 3rd last picture is John Flinn's MG which set identical times in both lanes) Thanks for all your work Art. It's great!

    • A Decade of Spa Lyons! More Than A Decade of Spa Lyons! In the growing metropolis of Milton, ON (just west of Toronto along the 401) you will find Porsche911's circuit Spa Lyons which has given 1:32 racers thrills, chills & spills on one of the largest fully scenerized 3 lane layouts in Southern Ontario. One of the very first DArt layouts this circuit features both 4" and 3" lane spacing, long straights, plenty of fast and medium speed corners plus a hairpin squeeze at the last corner! This gallery of Spa Lyons includes recent pictures from yours truly plus others taken many years ago by Dr. Vanski. Enjoy! [foogallery id="19772"]

    • Introduction to The Ring – A Few Photographs You'll find a few pictures taken over the years from the inception of The Ring up to the present. Those of you familiar enough with this circuit may spot several additions to track that are missing from most of these pictures... enjoy! [foogallery id="20182"] All of the structures and nearly all of the trees (hemlocks, willow, aspen and others) are scratch built or hand made. Originally the Koni triangle tower at the Start/Finish line was lit with a rice bulb but as with most of the lights including those in the pit lane they've burned out and must be replaced. Perhaps a move to LEDs is in order one day. The start line has coloured LED lane markers embedded flush to the track surface which are still as bright as when they were installed - useful back when the Slot.It 2.4h enduros ran both evening and night rotations... originally the inside lane was blue but because I had a bag of green, yellow and red LEDS it was switched to green - not that it matters... I even forgot that. Given the footprint of the room I've packed as much track as I think I could marshal comfortably. Several years back I did contemplate adding an extension to the existing circuit in the form of an upper level suspended immediately above the track but decided against that for multiple reasons - thankfully so. If I were to reroute this circuit again I would do away with the squeeze and migrate to using a dead strip but I don't think I would change anything else... Given that all three lane lengths are within 3/4 of an inch, there are an equal number of left and right corners, 3 1/2" lane spacing throughout which is perfect for 1:32, a 19' long straight with driver stations close together in the same location and every corner can be comfortably marshaled I'm not sure I could improve the current layout. At 72' it is just enough of a challenge to reward both models that are set up properly and a skilled and consistent racing style. Now that I am older the wooden stools at each of the marshaling posts are a luxury I cannot do without. I may still add three stools for the racers one day but it isn't in the budget right now. Time will tell. My two monitor system seems to work well enough without any ghosting and even though my eyes aren't what they once were I still have no problem seeing the small font size while setting up heats. Not seeing what you are doing is just too frustrating. I've always used the SlotTrak software (which is now freeware) since it allows so many choices setting up heats and together with my Trackmate timing hardware and my 20 year old notebook computer SlotTrak has been bullet proof. The only problems on a race night have been user induced... specifically me not correctly formatting the heats or screwing something or other up... I used to enjoy chasing that faster lap, long race heats, hosting all day long enduro style racing events, iron fingers and hosting groups of 10 or 12 racers. Now I'm just fine and quite happy with slow but period correct scratch built models carefully and respectfully circling a clean, smooth and unproblematic track in a comfortable environment with shorter heats along with good company in a much smaller group - so much so that my next routed track (if there is one) will be just two lanes at most. We'll see... The perfect number of participants for racing at The Ring is 7 - 3 racers and 4 marshals. Any more and someone is just watching and not participating. Track calls can still be avoided with 6 participants but with 5 or fewer they become a necessity in certain areas. So for these reasons participation at The Ring will be capped at 7 for the foreseeable future - whether or not a cap is even needed may be moot since it has been quite some time since The Ring has even hosted as many as 7 builders...
