    • Classic Era Challenge III (1966 – 1971) – August 10, 2018 @ The Ring After some head scratching, a few postponements and a venue change it is finally time to get the ball rolling for Round III. Due to the season a smaller turnout is expected which means that those who do attend will get much more racing in... so in the famous words of Whitesnake - 'Here we go again':Over the next few days I'll post the # list we have so far along with event details. The rules are pretty simple - any model with a hard body/shell that competed in an endurance race during this period whether RTR, 'unobtainium', made by NASA or pulled from thin air with DArt 'Orange Dot' club urethane tires. Should anyone need orange dot tires please let me know. If you do not yet have your racing #s or if you have any other questions this is the topic to reply to.

    • R32 XXVI @ The Ring – July 1, 2019 What better way to cap off a long weekend and Canada Day specifically? Projecting an intimate turnout means even more laps for those that do attend. Rumour has it that the DArt Auto Union Type C will be released this day too - just in time for the next Coppa D'oro - and another reason to come by... see everyone at the races! • R32 XXXV @ Spa-Lyons – February 24, 2020 On a chilly February evening, and for the second time this decade, teams loaded up their transporters for the journey to Spa-Lyons. Teams arrived to find the track already alive with spectators, many who had come to cheer on their favourite who was scheduled to debut the new Rover BRM turbine car. Spectators and media had assumed the best possible locations. Even Bib was trying to get in on the show. Track regulars Bill and Sally were back at Hot Tub Corner again, but mindful of the stir created by them during the last race meeting, the Woman’s White Cross League were there in their proper skirts and practical loafers, attempting (somewhat futilely perhaps) to preserve virtuous behaviour for all of mankind!! As the evening began, drivers seemed unusually well behaved (perhaps it was the lack of a NASCAR event) and things started off smoothly with a 50’s Vintage race. After a very gentlemanly race with few incidents, Robert Manzon in his beautiful Gordini T-32, relived his triumphant finish in the GP of Reims and showed the field the way home with 63 laps. He was followed one lap later (62) by ‘The Pampas Bull’ Jose Froilan Gonzalez, showing the Italian flag and driving the same Ferrari 375 he had driven to victory in the 1951 Silverstone GP. Two laps back with 60 was Snidley Whiplash in his beautiful turquoise Maserati 250F. With 58 laps, and in his reserve Ferrari D50, was Juan Manuel Fangio with 58 laps. Next up on the schedule were sports cars. A mixed bag representing a wide range of eras took to the track. A Jaguar XK120 fresh from the Alpen Rally led the field with 61 laps, followed by a 1965 Rover BRM driven by crowd favourite Sir Jackie Stewart only 5 seconds behind in second. Punching well above it’s class, the VW Beetle 1200 DeLuxe of Manuel Hinke, fresh (??) from it’s running in the 1954 Carrera Panamericana finished a distant 3rd with 57 laps, but showing it's heels to an even older 1950 Ferrari 166 MM/212 “Uovo” driven by Giannino ‘the tailor’ Marzotto that finished with 56 laps. With 52 laps, the 1966 Porsche 904 GTS of George Follmer and Peter Gregg that ran in the 1966 Sebring 12 hours followed along after a very tidy run. Sir Jackie’s result sent many of the elated fans scurrying to open a fresh Tripel Karmeliet and racing was paused so all could enjoy the moment. After a break and a delicious chocolate cupcake sugar fix courtesy of Johnathan the drivers were back at it in Vintage Lemans cars. A lone Ferrari 512S Coda Lunga in very un-Italian silver led an almost all Porsche grid to the chequered flag with a blistering 68 laps. It was followed 3 laps later by a Porsche 907 LH in livery as raced in the 1968 24H of Daytona piloted by Jo Siffert & Hans Hermann. It was followed 2 laps later by a Porsche 917K from the 1970 24 Hrs. of Lemans and driven by Gijs Van Lennep & David Piper with 63 laps. Next along with 62 laps was a 1971 Porsche 917LH  in Martini livery that was raced by Gérard Larrousse & Vic Elford. A 1969 Targa Florio liveried Porsche 907K piloted by Hans Dieter Dechent and Gerhard Koch rounded out the field with 57 laps. The evening ended with CanAm cars roaring to life. After many enlightening trips past Hot Tub Corner the McLAREN M8D sponsored by Paul Newman Racing and as driven by  Bob Bondrant at the 1971 series opening race at Mosport easily outclassed the field with a scorching 73 laps. Eating tire dust all the way home, the team of an Alfa Romeo T33/4 driven by Scooter Patrick and sponsored  by West Coast Distributor Otto Zipper Alfa and  a Chaparral 2E as  piloted by Phil Hill at the 1966 Mosport Can-Am trailed in 6 laps later with 67 circuits. A McLaren M20 piloted by Denny Hulme was further back with 64 laps and having a few mechanical issues a 1974 McLaren M20 Interseries car piloted by privateer Mark Kelleners finished with 58 laps. A 1971 Sebring liveried Alfa Romeo T33/3 liveried as driven by Nino Vaccarella and Tony Heinzman finished with 57 laps. To the victors went the champagne as they were all toasted appropriately, in the finest time honoured tradition. It was great to return again to Spa-Lyons. Thanks to our host Drew and his wife Nancy for their hospitality on a brisk February evening!

    • Bass-Seca Build Bass-Seca After who knows how many years of racing at multiple home and club tracks, my man cave has gotten a new addition built by Art! A small but exciting looking layout of approximately 44 feet for 1:32 racing with plenty of elevation changes themed after Laguna Seca's "Corkscrew". I gave my design to track builder extraordinaire Professor Tschinkel earlier this year and, thanks to Covid restrictions, he built a modular track that could be fairly quickly taken apart and reassembled. Art built the basics at his place and then disassembled it and into a VW Atlas went ALL the pieces and reassembly began at my place. Track reconstruction, lane taping, power and computer, border walls and more now done. Some detail work still to be completed but the track is now operational and the first race done with Joe Guts and I running Group 5 cars. But the track is much more fun with the slower classes! Before racing ever happened though I christened the track with laps done in remembrance, and with cars, from racers who are no longer with us. John F and Paddy you will always be remembered. (The 3rd last picture is John Flinn's MG which set identical times in both lanes) Thanks for all your work Art. It's great!

    • A Decade of Spa Lyons! More Than A Decade of Spa Lyons! In the growing metropolis of Milton, ON (just west of Toronto along the 401) you will find Porsche911's circuit Spa Lyons which has given 1:32 racers thrills, chills & spills on one of the largest fully scenerized 3 lane layouts in Southern Ontario. One of the very first DArt layouts this circuit features both 4" and 3" lane spacing, long straights, plenty of fast and medium speed corners plus a hairpin squeeze at the last corner! This gallery of Spa Lyons includes recent pictures from yours truly plus others taken many years ago by Dr. Vanski. Enjoy! [foogallery id="19772"]

    • Introduction to The Ring – A Few Photographs You'll find a few pictures taken over the years from the inception of The Ring up to the present. Those of you familiar enough with this circuit may spot several additions to track that are missing from most of these pictures... enjoy! [foogallery id="20182"] All of the structures and nearly all of the trees (hemlocks, willow, aspen and others) are scratch built or hand made. Originally the Koni triangle tower at the Start/Finish line was lit with a rice bulb but as with most of the lights including those in the pit lane they've burned out and must be replaced. Perhaps a move to LEDs is in order one day. The start line has coloured LED lane markers embedded flush to the track surface which are still as bright as when they were installed - useful back when the Slot.It 2.4h enduros ran both evening and night rotations... originally the inside lane was blue but because I had a bag of green, yellow and red LEDS it was switched to green - not that it matters... I even forgot that. Given the footprint of the room I've packed as much track as I think I could marshal comfortably. Several years back I did contemplate adding an extension to the existing circuit in the form of an upper level suspended immediately above the track but decided against that for multiple reasons - thankfully so. If I were to reroute this circuit again I would do away with the squeeze and migrate to using a dead strip but I don't think I would change anything else... Given that all three lane lengths are within 3/4 of an inch, there are an equal number of left and right corners, 3 1/2" lane spacing throughout which is perfect for 1:32, a 19' long straight with driver stations close together in the same location and every corner can be comfortably marshaled I'm not sure I could improve the current layout. At 72' it is just enough of a challenge to reward both models that are set up properly and a skilled and consistent racing style. Now that I am older the wooden stools at each of the marshaling posts are a luxury I cannot do without. I may still add three stools for the racers one day but it isn't in the budget right now. Time will tell. My two monitor system seems to work well enough without any ghosting and even though my eyes aren't what they once were I still have no problem seeing the small font size while setting up heats. Not seeing what you are doing is just too frustrating. I've always used the SlotTrak software (which is now freeware) since it allows so many choices setting up heats and together with my Trackmate timing hardware and my 20 year old notebook computer SlotTrak has been bullet proof. The only problems on a race night have been user induced... specifically me not correctly formatting the heats or screwing something or other up... I used to enjoy chasing that faster lap, long race heats, hosting all day long enduro style racing events, iron fingers and hosting groups of 10 or 12 racers. Now I'm just fine and quite happy with slow but period correct scratch built models carefully and respectfully circling a clean, smooth and unproblematic track in a comfortable environment with shorter heats along with good company in a much smaller group - so much so that my next routed track (if there is one) will be just two lanes at most. We'll see... The perfect number of participants for racing at The Ring is 7 - 3 racers and 4 marshals. Any more and someone is just watching and not participating. Track calls can still be avoided with 6 participants but with 5 or fewer they become a necessity in certain areas. So for these reasons participation at The Ring will be capped at 7 for the foreseeable future - whether or not a cap is even needed may be moot since it has been quite some time since The Ring has even hosted as many as 7 builders...

    • New track in the east Basic plans have been drawn up by Art to make a 2-lane new track in my basement. Art was kind enough to take on the task of fitting a small track into a tiny basement. I don't have a name for it yet. Maybe the KRZ Twister? Name suggestions are most welcome. The final dimensions will be on a 5' foot by 10' foot base. The closest rooms to the track are the washroom and kitchen. It should work out well to host races for small groups. Everything in life is time sensitive. I should have done this a few years ago. Thank you to Art for accepting the challenge.

    • MVL Saturday September 10, 2022 Art I had to create a new thread for this event since the original has disappeared. Thank you for hosting, it was a fun day of racing with a great group of guys.  Too many close battles in every class to mention. We are all very lucky to be able to race at such an incredible venue.  I'm looking forward to the next race. Ken, it was great to see you out and enjoying our favorite hobby!

    • The new Hot Rod Garage I finally tore apart the workbench and moved it out of the track room. An opportunity to clean up and re-organize. The bench as it used to be. Lots of holes were left in the walls. Oops. Me fix! The bench was moved into the basement kitchen. The drill press is now on the other side of the kitchen, and away from the slot car assembly area. A plywood back was added to the bench. Look wife... no more holes in the walls! (Except for the tire-rack on the right side) I can finally start building cars again. And finish the track room!

    • New Power Supply Solution for The Ring Gents, In anticipation of the long awaited return to racing at The Ring there will be one significant upgrade to the track which in a perfect world should go unnoticed by everyone who races - a modern three power supply solution - replacing the older linear single supply - for my three lane track. In recent years I've seen two original Trackmate Power Supplies go flaky as they age out of warranty. With large capacity linear supplies becoming impossible to find at a reasonable price point it was time to bite the bullet and adopt a solution using the newer switchable technology to power our tracks. Since many reasonably priced supplies are only 10A one is not enough to power a three or four lane track. Last spring while searching for a power supply for Nova Ridge I would have used four smaller switchable supplies had I not discovered a robust old school linear Pyramid 30A adjustable supply. That PS is working exceptionally well at Nova Ridge. Unfortunately it is no longer produced and as some say, unobtainium. Initially skeptical of these non-CSA compliant 10A switchable supplies manufactured in China I was pleasantly surprised by a fellow racers experience with one on his 2 lane DArt slot car track. So the Amazon order was made. I already purchased four separate relays which I was going to use last spring so now I had everything I needed - three power supplies, three relays, 16 gauge wiring and banana plugs. I removed the original single relay Trackmate power card and replaced it with three individual relays each connected to the 85 and 86 outputs of the red Trackmate mother card. Each relay was spliced into the positive feed between the power supply and the driver station. The negative feed bypassed each relay. Since each lane now has independent power there should be no more power interruptions or changes (surges or drops) for cars leaving the track, riders, or incorrect controller hookups. In other words the power for each lane should be completely isolated from the others... that is the theory at least - but there is only one way to test this - a race!!!

    • Monday April 3, 2023 @ 7pm – Wheel Inserts 101 Gents, Now that the worst of covid is behind us and we get back into full blown racing I thought it best to start off slow with something that might be useful for almost everyone. Most of the models we scratch build use wheels that require inserts so it makes sense to start with something so common. And the techniques used to paint and weather inserts can be used for many other parts of a build too. Wheel inserts are usually the last part of any build to be completed. Often they are just given a single splash of paint and then installed as is. But you can use them to help make your model really pop - and should - since it is so easy to do! Here I will do my best to show everyone how I prepare, paint, weather & install inserts. As with most aspects of our hobby there is no right or wrong way. Furthermore, you may have some very helpful tips and tricks to add to our workshop, so please do! During this workshop we'll work on any inserts that are purchased so if you need inserts for a current project you'll get them finished and ready to go! If you bring your wheels I'll show you how I would install them too! NOTE: If a set of inserts need a shot of Tamiya or Chrome please let me know in advance so that I can prime and spray them the night before so that they are already dry for us to work on. Make sure to RSVP your spot in the calendar because space is limited. Thanks for browsing!!!

    • The Nova Ridge Experiment A little while back it was discussed that the Nova Ridge track lane spacing might fit 1/24 or 1/25 scale cars. The idea went to sleep for a little while. Then a friend at the Group 25 modeller's club said he had a dozen 1/25 full size bodies, chrome, and window kits for sale at $5 each. The perfect solution for a test. Art was with me that day. We both jumped at the opportunity, and bought all twelve kits (see classifieds if you want one). Test #1 - The bodies were set on the track to see if they could pass each other. A painted body was located at the recent Group 25 slot car flea market. The paint sucks, but it too was only $5. It sped up the test. A chassis was made to fit using 1/32 parts. One of the points of this test was to make it affordable (Cheap!). A Fox-10 motor was used. They retail for $8.95 US and Professor Motor has over 8,000 motors in stock. A nice affordable set of DArt wheels and tires were used to round out the test. This is the test car made with a $5 body. This is not a new class. It's simply a test to see if these cars can pass each other without creating a smash-up derby. We definitely expect these "Big Bruisers" to trade paint. This test only applies to the Nova Ridge track. These cars won't fit anywhere else. The 1/25 scale cars will likely not be a part of any 1/32 race. It may end up becoming a once-in-a-while evening here and there. Time will tell. Five Nova Ridge regulars have already bought a 1/25 body in anticipation. JMSracer has the coolest 1960 Ford Starliner already built and ready to race. The test continues. More to come. Ken

    • Nova Ridge Open House I delivered these four lovely Fly Classics to Nova Ridge yesterday in time for Mike's Open House. Mike's guests had a blast running them at a lower voltage. Some were even half decent racers!!! After some practice we ran an IROC race for several guests who were keen to try. Met many interesting friends of Mike, including one of the four creators of Trivial Persuit and another a prominant Canadian comedian - a local Mississauga boy and muscle car enthusiast too! Sandwiches and wraps provided by Casa Dolce were scrumptious too! Many thanks to Mike for inviting us to play in his man cave! Thanks to Porsche911 and Kensredzed for helping corral the cats too!!!

    • Spa Lyons Feb 10 2024 A Speedy 6 descended on Spa, 1st event in a long time, and Brian J's inaugural pilgrimage to the Holy land of Milton.. :>) An interesting escalation of decades and speeds were the selected program for the day. Though Valentines Day was days away, no Love lost on the circuit! 1st up was Hot Rods, Brillcream, Beachboys, and the acrid smell of Burnouts filled the air... Fred's Tudor was tu fast for the rest of the fleet, though the Greektown Garage 49 was a Souvlaki away from taking the top spot, followed by the Rat Finked 32 for the podium. The Chicken flew the coop, and had it not been Super Bowl weekend, "1.45 Billion Chicken Wings consumed", it may have been in flight! Next on the dance card was 60's Sportscars, no rolled up shirtsleeves with Marlboros for these pilots at the wheel of these 'Fine Foreign Fenders', their girlfriends riding Vespa's side saddle, pondering if "Henri" will be there for Diner, as per Sir Jackie, "a time when Sex was safe, and Motor racing dangerous(I love that!) :>) A scant 1.4 seconds separated the podium, with Sir Jackie, errr Sir Kenneth of Scarborough(sounds quite regal) taking the top spot, and the kiss of course!   Now up a decade, Classic Lemans but 'hot motored'... But 1st a sidebar..."Karate Kris", whilst Marshalling, displayed his finely honed "Oi-zuki" (lunge punch), perhaps he and Gary have the same Sensei... :>) But all fine, nowhere near the carnage of 55 Lemans, or for that matter, Jimbo's Surgical slicing...but I digress... Sir Surtees prevailed, with some very fine fine duels, and the bespoke 917 showed some promise(now back to the Skunkwerks!)  Fast forward 30+ years, and now the Pilots of yesteryear are hopefully watching, wondering what THEY could have done with such technological marvels! Modern LMP, have at it! Hmmm, looks like I have to add pics later...stay tuned

    • Welcome to The Lane Art thanks for adding this page for me, tonight I tracked down the download from the 2015 blog I ran and it contains pictures of the build process for The Lane and also predecessor tracks.   So that will be my material source to start off. The first question might be how did I come up with the name.  Not too far along the build process Art asked me “so what are you going to name it?”.  I thought about it and the next time we met I said it’s called “The Lane”.  Why?  Well my lifelong English soccer [football for the purists] team is Tottenham Hotspur.  The stadium that they played at was called White Hart Lane which was affectionately referred to by supporters as “The Lane”.  To me it implies racing connotations so it seemed a natural choice to call the track that for a number of reasons. So what does it look like?

    • Spa Session December 9 2023 It had been quite a while since the formidable Spa circuit hosted and event, and the crowd of Belgian Bottomed Belgian Beauty's fueled with Belgian Brew waited in excited anticipation. What was to be a joust amongst the Fearless Five turned out to be the 'Fab Four', as alas, our Fearless leader could not attend. :>( Mia, Bill, Chris in his inaugural/debut and the host.. The crowd was treated to some good ol' Suthren fun in the 1st event, Nastycab, lots of rubbin', but no tuggin'. :>) The Sharpie and it's pilot certainly were, and clearly, the Rainbow Warrior has spent far too much time of late in the commentary box, as his skill was far from Sharp! Next up, a slightly more refined group of gentlemen drivers made their way from the paddock to start, for a Classic Battle, the Porschekrieg of Classic LM. The Ferrari teams were not present, as they had enjoyed too much Grappa, Cannelloni, and local female enticement the prior evening... A brief interlude whilst fans nourished and replenished fluids, and then to the frenetic pace of GRP C, which saw a battle of teams representing former allied nations of WWII, Porsche, Lancia and Toyota. :>) The Canon was rocket like, and the 2 Toyo's finished a scant 1.25 seconds apart for 2nd/ 3rd The closing event was another Grupen fest, this time, FUNF! The MOMO should have been a little SLO-MO, as jumping the line(dare I say premature) proved to be costly, as the Fruit of the loom was smooth as silk and prevailed by a lengthy extension. :>) A fun day indeed, though 1 marred by the fatalities of many spectators during numerous shunts, not seen since the days of Jimbo's surgical Scaleauto slicing tragedy... Looking forward to next 1!

    • Chassis mapping The more cars you make. The easier it gets to map out a body. Don't worry too much about sticking to the car list. I can map out a body fairly quickly. Show me some bodies that aren't normally slot cars. Those tend to be more interesting. Porsche911's 1961 Ford Ranchero is pretty cool. Not many of those around. Ken

    • How to Reset Your Mini-Z Steering Servo I was having a steering issue where the trim had to be set all the way to one end to centre the steering but found the following fix on line: With the transmitter turned off, center the wheels by hand as straight as you can. Then turn on the chassis, press and hold the bind button on the car until the light blinks quickly. Then you can turn your chassis back off. Once all that's done, turn your transmitter on, set steering trim to 0 (center) and turn your chassis back on. Repeat if necessary!
