IROC 2024 Series Gents, Talk is cheap, especially when it comes to an IROC series... but there might still be time to get the ball rolling for 2024 with a new IROC Challenger Series for both constructors and pilots racing at Nova Ridge and Molto VeLoce with the additional home host track too! Interested? The platform will be based on a finished DArt Ferrari 312P (with card interior) that is molded in one of 12 unique colours and using mandatory (and provided) DArt wheels, painted inserts & marked club series urethane tires. Each coloured model will have a distinctive livery. Chassis, configuration, body mounting system, motor, gearing, and anything else are completely open. Build or assemble it yourself or have anyone else do it for you. Maintain it or improve it after each race or don't bother touching it. The choice is yours. So long as you bring your working 312P model you can participate and race all of the models in true IROC fashion by rotating through the lanes (and models). With 12 models on a 4 lane track everyone would compete across three rotations: Every model is assigned to a lane and rotation (1Green, 1Yellow, 1Red, 1Blue, 2G, 2Y, 2R, 2B, 3G, 3Y, 3R or 3B) and stays on that lane throughout; Every participant races through the first rotation (european) until everyone has gone; Second and third rotations are raced until everyone has raced every model for an equal amount of time (usually 3 minutes); Both pilot and model/manufacturer results are recorded (top and lowest finish for each model/manufacturer in every race is dropped as well); On a three lane home track there will be four rotations instead of three. Any home track will have an opportunity to host up to two races. Every participant will provide and maintain their working 312P entry. 'Working' means that it is not only raceable but also meets a minimum lap time of 130% of the pole time, although this could be tweaked. If you don't supply a working 312P entry for that race then you cannot participate in that IROC race. Models will be assigned to a lane and rotation after qualifying so that the fastest models will be raced last and models performing alike will race together as much as is possible. The top three finishing pilots from the previous race will qualify the models. If a model cannot finish a heat then the closest available match will replace it for the duration of the rotation. Other tweaks will need to be made but you get the point... This will be a separate series and not piggyback R32, S32 or S24 racing. The day, time and frequency will be determined by the availability of the participants who purchase/enter models, but it would be preferable to have the series run at least once monthly. The cost of the completed 312P with card interior, four wheels, unmounted & untrued marked tires and painted inserts is $100. An extra set of wheels, unmounted & untrued marked tires and painted inserts is $50... An extra set of wheels, mounted and trued marked tires and painted inserts is $100... Any participant may purchase and enter more than one model and will get to race as often as they have working models entered... (so 3 models then 3x the racing and each scored separately - so it would be possible to have one racer take all three podium places...) Purchased models are owned and kept by the participant. The following molded colours will become available: Green (sold) Yellow (sold) Red (sold) Blue (sold) Charcoal White Orange (sold) Purple Brown/Rust Pink (sold) Baby Blue Liveries will use peel and stick decals and models will not have a clear lacquer or acrylic finish. Completed liveries and wheels/tires/inserts will be available in December, 2023, on a first come first choice basis. Racing will start on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

Corvair progress, slowly…. Getting there, I know, I know, do posts 1st, aesthetics last....well, perhaps a slow learner.....I had an opportunity for a few (rare) hours, so decided I would graphic my Corvair kit. All all old homemade decals(work well on white/silver bodies)Awaiting the chassis setup/motor/gears/wheels etc(KRZ chassis, thanks KRZ!) Made a little 'scoop too'

NSR 917 White Kit FINALLY got around to finishing a 'White Kit' I painted and mostly decaled a long time ago...was in the "To be completed" group(along with many others) :>) Anyway, done...Took a while to configure a Pioneer driver as the NSR pilot just doesn't look right proportion, but it is a very nice kit. Will no doubt be waaay underpowered in the 'unlimited VLM' class, but so be it.

In Memory of Model Murdering AKA Bill Hall A talented friend and personal HO mentor recently passed away from a massive stroke. Bill Hall was truly an Aurora HO master. He was a reputable Porsche mechanic in the 1:1 world. But he loved tinkering with slot cars. Bill did not invent "goop" (50% plastic and 50% Testors 3502 plastic cement). But he sure was an artist with it. Bill repaired old and rare cars that were long since discontinued back in the 60's. He could take a car that was stepped on, missing body posts and quarter panels. And reform every part to a factory finish. In proper colour, and without paint. I'll let the pics speak for themselves. Slate grey is one of the rarest Aurora split window Stingrays for HO size slot cars. Bill didn't get a chance to polish it before passing away. An old El Camino that got crushed. Beside broken window posts. One of the second biggest issues with old Aurora cars is many people opened up the rear fender wells with a rough blade or file to get monster tires to stick out past the body. The flea markets are littered with them. Most colours aren't worth saving. But black ones sure are. R.I.P. my dear friend Bill Hall.

S24 Dec 16/23 With Christmas around the corner. It was good to finish off the year with some relaxing laps around the track with the bigger cars. There were a few cars missing, as well as a few new ones. Up first is Felix's Monte Carlo. Sittin' low and looking sharp on a brass chassis. Chris B showed up with two new cars. A '60 Starliner, and a '67 Comet Cyclone GT. Nothing like jumping in with two feet. MIA made a new foam interior for his car. It went on a diet and lost a ton of weight. He says it accelerates much faster. The jury is still out on whether it's an improvement or not. Crazy paint and stripes on this car! Jim installed a new lightweight interior in his pink '60 Starliner. That almost completes the car. But his new '62 ultra red BelAir complete with interior sure made everyone's eyes pop! More new stuff to come next month! Merry Christmas to everyone!!!

64 Impala SS The green colour of this Impala is amazing. A white vinyl roof really sets it off. Drew did a stunning job with the paint. The hood was epoxied in place. Then the extra posts for the static chassis were trimmed off. The rad support was also removed. The chassis was assembled to set the height of the body posts. The post lengths are 31mm front, and 30mm rear. The numbers on the chassis are the tire diameters. The body will sit about 1mm higher with the stainless and urethane washers added. This is the same body height as the Olds 442. The wheel well shape makes it look very different. A thicker washer can be added to the rear body posts to create a little more rake. More to follow. Ken

66 Corvair Long before I joined S32 and Group 25. I built an AMT 1/25 static 1966 Corvair. I didn't paint it because I didn't know how. I eventually learned how to disassemble and paint cars. It was time to re-visit the old Corvair. It has a new chassis with a corrected wheelbase.

71 Charger RT Someone requested a lesson in paint. Today was the day. I needed something to paint in order to show what to avoid. The only body I had ready to paint was an AMT 71 Charger RT. It was one of my first model car kits as a 10-year old. Time to fulfill an old childhood dream and make this one go! This colour leans more towards a Kawasaki green. No metallic. I think it suits the car. Now I can put it aside for a few weeks while I do other things.

Recent Slot Car Flea Market This is the fourth year that Michael and I made the trek out to Dungannon for the flea market. It's always a beautiful drive out to the country this time of year. We always have a lot of fun. Here are a few pics from the show. Lots of HO scale vendors there. But there's always a few 1/32 temptations. I only bought one 1/32 car. Something I've been looking for, for a long time. The yellow Boss 302 Mustang in street trim. And a few old HO cars. Thanks for looking. Ken

Bearings and axles Greetings from Bancroft gentlemen. I usually take something with me when I go to the cottage. The Watson Indy needed to be assembled. Every once in a while I run into an oversized axle that doesn’t fit the bearings. I’m glad I brought other things to do. Too bad I only brought two axles for the build. Make sure to bring a bearing with you to Ernie’s to test any axles you want to buy. Ernie doesn’t make the axles himself and will happily exchange any axle that doesn’t fit.

Recent Group 25 Show The show was a success. But it did have a few set backs. I was not feeling well and arrived very late. No early bird specials for me. Art was held back and could not make it. Everyone wishes him well, and sent greetings. Comparison to last year: Show stats. Contest - 162 entries Last year 210 entries # through the door....436 Last year…383 I had no desire to buy anything this year. But staring across at Marty and Cindy's tables all day was a temptation in itself. A Ferrari for $15. Someone already started the chassis. Shame. Slot car maybe? I bought this for $20. Thanks Marty and Cindy! Ted and I often trade stuff. He donated this to me. A Strombecker Citroen?! It's in amazing shape except for the tires. Thanks Ted!

Baldwin Motion Vega I was recently talking to a friend about this car. It's nothing like its little sister with the 4-cyl failure with the aluminum block. If a Motion Camaro, Vega, or Corvette came up to your sports car at a red light. You quickly made a right turn to avoid being embarrassed. You can just barely detect the 454 badge on the side of the fender. A sleeper it wasn't. You could hear one coming for you half a mile away.

Targa Florio Porsche 908/3 Test Car I had a white NSR Porsche 908/3 body and looked for a Targa Florio livery but it looked like they have all been done by our talented members. I came across a Test Car painted red but the images I could find were mostly black and white with the odd colour photo. My scratch built chassis used a Slot It motor pod and I have to thank Ken for drilling the 4 holes through the brass stock to accept the pod. You can't beat a Drill Press!

62 Bel Air, Bubble Top The bubble tops were interesting cars. I would hate to flip one in an accident. But they sure looked cool. Here are the parts. The inspiration for this build came from these photos. This is what the test looked like before the body posts were installed. The body still needs the chrome strip going the full length of the car. I'll attempt that another day when I feel brave. A full interior made of card stock is next. Thank you kindly for looking. Ken

Another Indycar After looking at all the wonderful builds for the Indycar class, I felt inspired and decided to join in. I used the reliable KRZ aluminum chassis, DArt Watson Roadster kit, RS Slot wheels, and of course DArt urethane tires. The car is the Bryant Heating and Cooling Special driven by Len Sutton. Something a little different since we already have AJ and Parnelli liveried cars.

S24 Runabout Sessions Gents, Future S24 runabout sessions will no longer require registration. Please understand that these sessions are for active members of Scratch32. Anyone without a Scratch32 account who might be interested in participating should contact either myself or Ken. Normally these sessions will be held once a month on a Saturday but there will be the odd switch to a Sunday due to scheduling constraints. Looking ahead we will begin racing our large scale (1:25) Boulevard Cruisers. If you have more than one model you can enter and race each one as a separate entry (numbers permitting). For info on class requirements please check the other threads in this subforum or just ask us. Eventually we'll post class criterium in accordance with the suggestions in those threads. If you do not have time to build your own chassis but are interested in participating please contact Ken to commission one of his KRZ chassis. Cheers!

Modern F1 class Thoughts have recently been exchanged at the last race about the modern F1 class. Many intersting points were made. I bought a Scalex modern F1 last Thursday night. It hit the floor twice on Saturday, and is now broken. The reason I bought it was because my other car sucks and is in need of a total rebuild. Now I have two Scalex cars in need of major repairs. I looked at Electric Dreams to see what a new Scalex car retails for. The average is $100 in US funds. There's an one ugly one in the bunch for $65 US. Many are as high as $129 to $149 just for an ordinary F1 car. Here's the car I bought last Thursday. It's available at Electric Dreams for $129 US funds. This car below is also $129 in US funds. While on the same site, I checked out Policar modern F1's. They start at $54.95 US for a generic coloured car. A fully decorated car like the one below goes as high as $64.95 USD. Not all that expensive. Instead of changing everything at once and pushing everyone into totally changing cars for this class. Can we add the Policar brand to the modern F1 class? If the Policar F1 is a lot cheaper, readily available, and a slightly better platform. Everyone should have no trouble phasing out the Scalex cars on their own over time. If someone is fully dedicated to their Scalex car, and talented at tuning them. Why not keep them going too? Just some food for thought since there were a few broken F1 cars last Saturday. I'm not looking forward to fixing either of my Scalex F1's. Ken

1965 Impala Super Sport This pre-painted and fully assembled static model came from a Group25 flea market. It was a quick test to see how these large cars would run at Nova Ridge. It was quickly turned into a slot car test bed. My humble apologies. The paint is ugly. But it passed the test. With the slot car test a complete success. It was time to freshen up the body. Off with the old paint. A full interior made of paper is next. Thanks for looking. Ken

1966 Olds 442 W30 I've never seen a slot car of a 66 Olds. It's an odd duck. Either you like them, or you don't. There's no middle ground. The box. The only parts that actually came in the box. Barely enough for a slot car. A pic of a completed kit on Google inspired the Tamiya Cobalt Green colour. A chassis was made. The car fell on its roof seconds after painting it. Thankfully a vinyl roof was in the works anyways. Problem solved. Mating the chassis to the body. The car is ready to run. It needs bumpers, window/body chrome, windows, and interior.

Stripping Old Paint Most of us know the benefit of using Super Clean to remove a bad paint job. But every once in a while you get stubborn paint that just won't budge. I bought this pre-painted body at a flea market for $5 as a quick test. Once it past the slot car test. I could not bear to look at the paint. It had a lot of bad blotches in various spots. The body looked like this after soaking for 2-weeks in Super Clean. The hood was the first test for Easy-Off oven cleaner. Overnight in Easy-Off did the trick. The only spots of paint left were from when glued covered the paint.

1964 Rover BRM I got very lucky in finding this kit. They simply aren't available anymore. The real cars were gas-turbine powered test-beds. Very strange car. The first step to planning out the chassis: What is the wheelbase? Using tires that are too large just for the purpose of measuring the wheelbase can reduce room for error. I happen to have a pair of old 17" inch Slot.It wheels/tires that were the wrong choice for another car. Perfect! Slide the body into the wheels/tires until the wheel-wells of the body centers the tires. (this one's easy because the wheel wells are round) Carefully slide the body away making sure not to move the wheels. I measure the left side of the axle holes on both wheels to get the wheelbase. In this case it's 73.30mm. It doesn't matter what the actual finished tire diameter is. The wheels will be perfectly centered in the wheel well. The old 17" inch wheels go back on the shelf to measure the next car.

Gear ratio for a Fox-10 Art was kind enough to provide a few 38T spurs to start the ball rolling. A 13t pinion was chosen for the first test for a 2.92 ratio. The rear tires were trued to 27mm in diameter. Turns out this was perfect for the Nova Ridge track. Jim and I went head to head beside each other for many laps. We were laughing all the way. I've always wanted to tinker with 1/25, but didn't think we could. I've had about thirty 1/25 kits hanging around from before I got into slot cars.

Paint Spree I just got back from the cottage, and painted a body or two while I was there. The first was a flat black Fly truck with a tobacco livery. A crappy colour with an undesirable livery is great excuse to paint it. Taking it apart was interesting. At least the weather was nice. Then I painted a few HO bodies. Between the truck and the HO cars, I went through three cans of clear-coat and ran out before I finished painting. Three bodies still need clear-coat. Practise is good.

You’ve taken me to the Darkside…. Yes, I vowed I wouldn't succumb to peer pressure, get engaged in the 1/25 60's sedan builds, well...guess what, I am weak... Got the Super Body kit deal from RZ (Thank you!), happened to have some 1/24, 1/25 engine parts(I knew I had a purpose when buying them), and voila....Still to be finished paint wise, chrome, touch ups etc, and of course, I need a KRZ chassis(Hello Ken) :>) Would like to shod this beast with Cragar style wheel inserts(Art). Overall, very happy with it so far, will see how it shakes down, and for me, the 3ft 30MPH rule is in effect... :>)

1953 Carrera Panamericana winner Fangio and Bronzoni won the 1953 Carrera Panamericana in their number 36 D24 Lancia. The slow motor classes are some of my favorites so I thought I'd give o'l number 36 a try. When finished this car should qualify for both our 50's sports car and our Carrera Panamericana classes. The body is 3D printed in Elegoo ABS like resin from a file I purchased online. The chassis was designed and printed by me in PLA+ on my FDM printer. The body weighs 10.5 grams and the chassis adds another 5. The D24 has very little front overhang, making designing the chassis and the location of the various front end components a challenge. I will add the body posts and source the images for making the decals next. Cheers Steve

59 Eldorado Biarritz Another beautiful Gunze Sangyo kit. "Biarritz" is Cadillac's fancy name for their Eldorado convertible. The same car in a hard-top was called a "Seville". Huge wings were "in style" back in the late 50's. I like the meadowlark yellow on the front of the box. But it's impossible to get that shade of light yellow in a spray can. I would need to move up into an air-gun. The colour below is an older spray paint now discontinued by Testors called "Lime Ice". The large metal flakes make it very 50's era. It suits a "Boulevard Cruiser".

Hot Rod sub classes From online, email and in person discussions over the past several years it should now be safe to say that the overall class of Hot Rods (HR) breaks down more precisely into the following sub classes: Street Rods (SR) - (aka Hot Rod) - Any modified or customized car or truck model from 1948 or earlier with or without fenders in paint or in primer; Rat Rods (RR) - Any custom car or truck model with a deliberately worn-down, unfinished appearance, typically lacking paint, showing rust, and made from cheap or cast-off parts; Street Machines (SM) - Any modified or customized car or truck model from 1949 or later with fenders in paint or in primer; and Gassers (GS) - A vintage drag car that was popularized in the '50s and '60s (up to 1968) that ran on gasoline and used a straight axle front suspension which gave the model a very high front end stance. Most gassers also sported Halibrand wheels, no front bumper, and had a front mounted Moon tank. The gasser form was dictated by function and most builders looked to eliminate as much weight as possible. Having their exhaust pipes exit through the front fender to shorten the length of exhaust tubing is another common characteristic of gassers. Builders used 1930s through 1950s production coupes or sedans to create these highly modified racing vehicles, including (but not limited to) the following: 1933 Willys Model 77 Coupe; 1940 Willys; 1941 Willys Americar; 1948 Anglia; 1949 Chevy Fleetline or Styleline; 1951 Henry J; 1955 Ford T-Bird; 1955 Chevy Nomad; 1955 Chevy; 1957 Corvette. I believe the first three sub classes are easily covered by the current Hot Rod (HR) class criteria. Gassers are another story never meant to be raced around corners. To encourage realism in Gasser models rather than institute some technical requirement (such as a minimum front axle height) a form of bracket (or minimum lap time) [if they are raced] may be a better solution. A minimum weight limit might also be incorporated to help offset the performance disadvantage. Thank you to everyone for their comments and especially to Belleville Kevin for bringing some much needed clarity to this otherwise vague class.

Porsche 550 Coupe Guten aben meine freunde, Porsche 550 Coupe reveal... :>) D'art kit, KRZ chassis(thank you Ken), Vanski motor, 10X23, RS slot wheels, D7's front, D8's rear...Fantasy livery, my home made decals(except Marchal headlamps). Car is smooth(read NOT a lot of speed), and apparently, the Lyons engineering team, in an effort to reduce 'unnecessary ballast' , elected to include brakes! Again, 3/30 rule invoked....I tried for hours to get the windshield/window for to sit just right, but $#@! I couldn't get it to sit perfectly, went with best overall fit...perhaps I'd bent it, did the best I could..will continue to learn(I hope!) But, it does look nice meandering Spa...On to the next project..

Unlimited open class bodies Here's a great source of lexan bodies for "Unlimited Open" class cars. http://www.bettaandclassic.com/index.htm Make sure you have a few minutes to spare before looking. There are a lot of very cool choices. Let me know if anyone wants to place an order with me to save on shipping from the UK? I can't believe that they actually make a 1972 Firenza. My first car.

Aston Ulster PGP+ entry Hello gang, 1935 Aston Ulster 1.5L PGP+ entry, Matchbox kit... I believe driven in the 1935 'Targa Abruzzi" by Giovanni Lurani(private entry) but after much research, no pics to corroborate(need our historian to wade in and virtually zeroid on Racingsportscars and other sites), but perhaps my sleuthing skills ain't what they used to be.... :>) Stupid question of the day...How do I add to model db? Thanks

Trans Am Plus (TA+) – More Restrictions Needed? Regarding our proposed TA+ criteria are there any additional restrictions that anyone wishes to suggest? So far we have: Eligible Models: Any hard body model that raced in the Trans Am series between 1966 and 1973 regardless of class. Motor: Any Gearing: Any Chassis: Any Tires: Rear – Any size DArt Club Series Urethane Tire Front – ‘Stock’ or any size DArt Club Series Urethane Tire NOTE that anything goes but for years raced, hard bodies & tires... ...of course the usual requirements must be met as with any class whether stock or open (ie. body, wheels and livery must look period correct, wheels/tires cannot exceed the width of fenders, etc.)

Where to source Rondels/Numbers Hi gents, Where do you get your decals from? I know the specific liveries are great from Indycals, but I'm looking for rondels/numbers, of varying fonts ideally, and more 60-70's centric style.... I've created many of my own decals, sponsor wise, but they're really only good on certain coloured cars, as of course I don't have an ALPS printer... I did buy some from SCC a few years ago but I've only had limited success, I usually ruin about 1 out 4 or 2 out of 4, even though I put a 'bonder' on prior to application, they seem to pull apart, disintegrate, VERY aggravating. I'd like to get some rondels that have perhaps a thin outer 'edge' in black, blue, red etc., and also numbers in Black, and white as well(use without rondel).I have made my own rondels with White decal paper and a punch, and they're not too bad, I can afford to ruin a few... :>) Appreciate suggestions, thanks in advance!

The 1954 Pegaso Z102 Cabriolet Saoutchik 2a Serie Street The Spanish company Pegaso is well-known for its trucks, busses and tractors but many people don't know that for a period of 7 years, the marque took a jaunt into the world of sportscar building – resulting in this, the Pegaso Z-102. This beautiful little car is the only Saoutchik Cabriolet Pegaso Z-102 Series II ever made, the coachwork on the body is jaw-dropping from every angle and the factory model was fitted with a 165hp, 2,814 cc quad-overhead camshaft V-8 with a 2-barrel Weber carburettor implies that it also has the legs to make it a hell of a fun drive. It was decided that the chassis, drivetrain and engine would all be built in house by Pegaso and then the rolling units would be shipped off to coachbuilders to have bodies fitted – in the tradition of pre-WWII automakers. This one-off Z-102 Series II Cabriolet was built by Saoutchik and was arguably the most beautiful of the 88 or so cars ever made by the company. In 2013 this model went for $700,000 USD at auction. Cut and paste this link on your browser to view it. https://youtu.be/S1R2KPRz_B8 Some links with information and photos https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paris_-_Retromobile_2014_-_Pegaso_Z-102_Série_II_cabriolet_-_1954_-_001.jpg https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Pegaso_Z-102 THIS BUILD The body of this model is from the Pegaso Collection by Top Slot. It's a highly detailed & finished resin body with a production run of only 300 worldwide. The model came with an MRRC Seabring chassis which didn't work very well with this heavy 50+ gram resin body. I replaced the original chassis with a custom aluminum chassis and used my Dremel tool to carve out a lot of excess resin material under the hood, to give this model a chance at being a decently performing slot car. The following are some photos of the model and the aluminum chassis. White wall tires are Dart tires.

Copper Tape Maintenance This is for owners of DArt tracks or others with copper taped mdf/wood tracks... and these are just my suggestions for maintaining your tape which have worked for me over the years... With the change in seasons no matter how hermetically sealed your track space is you will notice a change in expansion rates between the mdf and tape... and it may be more pronounced when your track is newer... but have no fear - it is easily fixed. For routine maintenance especially before hosting a race I recommend doing the following: As for regular track maintenance: 1. Vacuum the track surface and each slot; 2. Using a clean but dry microfibre pad with broom handle (or a cloth) sweep the entire track surface; 3. Inspect the copper tape for any lifting... and using a BIC lighter carefully burnish any bubbles/folds back down so the tape is flat; 4. Repair any breaks or damage to the tape if any; 5. Turn track and timing software on to check that it works; 6. Run a stock scaley car slowly in each lane to make sure there are no dead spots between any previous tape repairs... if any dead spots then take a sharp exacto knife, locate the beginning and the end of the section that is dead (by moving the car along that section until power is interrupted) and pierce or stab more tiny holes in the tape that overlaps the original tape (usually a short length of 1 or 2 cm - note the small holes in that short length already); New tape repairs: 1. Bridge the dead length (or cut) with a 4 or 5 cm piece of tape overlapping the original tape by a couple of centimeters at each end; 2. Before applying the tape cut each end of the tape at a 45 degree angle using scissors; 3. Remove backing and apply tape making sure there is enough overlap; 4. Burnish the new tape using a BIC lighter; 5. Stab holes on both ends where the tape overlaps until power is restored to the dead length; 6. Apply a small bead of superglue to the edges of the newly applied tape and let dry.
